Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 4th January 2007

Nice news Mr Millions, but not sure that 13th highest output is a good or bad omen for the New Year?

I can't believe that Unforgiven's one machine is churning out over 10K a week. What is the world coming to  Might as well give up on all my borgs at this rate, they're going to make no impact whatsoever soon (even though they were off over the holidays they're churning stuff out now, so watch out Dreeder, I'm still trying to hunt you down).

I'm impressed with the Team's output especially with so many going red despite the holiday period. Too many have gone for the SMP route. Looks like I'm going to have to play with the alien technology called Linux. Anyone point to an easy guide for installiing it as a dual boot without reformating all your existing single partition hard disk?

Seems a bit low but 10K is nothing to sniff at, congrats.

[siriusbvoice]Now all I have to do is get my loan and you lot will be laughing on the other side of your work units Mwhahahaha SMP/Linux/6600 and stuff ROCKS[/siriusbvoice] :D

I dunno when my loan is due, some time this month, so neerr!

I could have got my E6600 last month but that would have left me with absolutely no money for Christmas. I want an E6600 but I do have SOME priorities!

Realistically I am looking at early to mid-february before I can afford the upgrade money without sacrificing anything else I need money for.

Need to up my output for a few more days to get back on a level pegging, seems this one's going to go to the wire dude. ;)

Absolutely! It's going to be exciting stuff! We'll deserve a pint or two or ten after this epic battle comes to a conclusion ;)

I'd be glad to coach you through it as much as I can. I promise not to screw you up like I did to SiriusB. :o ;)

Start a thread or chuck me an email if you like.

I wanna know who's folding as Snapshot and forced me to use snapsh0t. Whoever he/she/it is, I've got him/her/it in my sights for stomping in a week or two.

I'm supposed to be rolling out twenty i820-based PCs and ten lapdogs at a school next week. I suspect I can hijack a core on each of them without anyone noticing which should get my WUs moving....

Be sure to play by the rules. No need to get fired over something so silly.

Considering the chrimbo shutdown I'm happy with 8.8K
Swamped with 2124/26's here so can't expect much (at lease they are low ram users)

Thanks for the news rich

@ billy I'm probably doing down that smp route too. what are the up/download file sizes like? And a dedicated 'how too duel boot linux' thread would be most helpfull. Better still would be an all you need is on this disk service too. :D

Nice work team - roll on next week with all the farms fireing on all cylinders and a team stomp or two :D

The download size depends on what you want to do with it. If the setup is JUST for FAH I'd go with the Server version which is without a GUI. It's about 300 MiB IIRC. If you want a desktop OS then you should go for the Desktop version. That'll be around 700 MiB.

It might be better to just a have one big thread in which FAH Linux users can post their questions and concerns as each individual case is different. I can give a basic overview but most everybody is going to deviate from it.

For example:
Download and burn .iso
boot into the installer
partition/format as necessary; most any file system will do. ext3 is fine
install SSH for remote monitoring/configuring (optional)
Download finstall as described in the sticky
execute finstall with the SMP flag
run installService
enjoy

Really good week for OcUK - especially considering most people's outputs are naturally down over christmas. Should be making some fair ppd when we're all back up to full speed!
Poor week from me due to PC being used all the time as its still christmas holidays - back to school on monday so production should increase then.
Im kinda tempted to go Linux too in all honesty, always wanted to look at it anyway so this provides a good reason!

Keep going guys - nice to see lots of new active folders recently too!

I'm only fired up to complete more WUs. The imposter is just a useful target along the way. There's no airgun club within easy reach of where we live now so this gives my competitive side an airing and hopefully does some good at the same time. It's not as much fun as lying in the mud, knocking over 'tin chickens', and it won't win me a bottle of good whisky like I did last month but it'll do for the moment.

I MAY be reformatting my Linux Partition and starting again once this WU has finished, so if you like I can do a step by step for installation using the Desktop version of Ubuntu.

I can also compile all the help Billy gave me in another thread.

Luckily I haven't done much to my install [except break something] so I wont have lost much in the way of settings/config.

If people really want this then I am happy to do it. Otherwise I will just have to make do without FahMon *looks at Billy*

I've still no idea what's going on. I'm about 4k down a week and my DA is dipping fast :(

Thanks as ever for the updates.
It could just be down to the WUs you're getting Huddy - there were some really naff ones round for part of last week and I've still got a few on the slower machines. Most new WUs since have been nice ones though.

Another good week for me. Lots of nice WUs and all rigs still working even though I've been away for over a week
I've noticed quite a few 21xx WUs coming through lately so output will probably drop a bit as a result.

Good week for the team too, 105,253 daily average is well

Thanks as always to Rich for the news and a warm foldy welcome to the new members.

Before I go, I'll just leave you with this little beauty:

:D

Fold on team 10.

Stan :)
