We all secretly love MSG because it makes food taste amazing. You can buy it in bags in Chinatown but it's been slowly disappearing from our food. Pot Noodles, crisps, packet food really tastes like dirt without it.

So what's still got it?

I'll kick off with those Demae Ramen instant noodles from Chinese supermarkets. Loaded with the stuff. So much so I swear I have a headache from eating them. But BOY they taste good!

Most chinese takeaways around my way still use MSG, I know the ones that don't so only go there.

Some gravy brands used to use it, Co-op ones did from what I remember.

I have some oriental onion seasoning I randomly picked up from an Asian food supplier a while ago and it's full of MSG, that's imported stuff. As has been said, I doubt MSG is common in food these days, just replaced with something else that will be found to be equally as bad.

There are probably more foods than you think still using MSG, as it often goes by another name to hide the fact the product contains it at all.

e.g.

Textured protein

Autolyzed yeast

Yeast extract

Yeast food

Glutamate

Glutamic Acid

Autolyzed plant protein

Sodium caseinate

Calcium caseinate

Hydrolyzed protein

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein(HVP)

Hydrolyzed plant protein (HPP)

Soy protein extract

Natural flavors

I'm not allergic to MSG but I have an Intolerance. If I have anything with MSG I get really bad headaches the day after feels like my spinal cord has swelled up where it meets my brain.

My last episode was the morning after eating a small handful of KP dry roasted nuts.

That was months ago

Wouldn't you have similar problems with high-glutamate foods? i've never heard of an MSG intolerance before

As far as I'm aware, there is still no "unsafe" level for MSG consumption, and I can't really see why there would be - so a comparison to salt isn't really valid. As far as I'm aware, there's still no studies demonstrating any serious side effects even in v large doses.

You'd think so but no.

We've talked on the forum before about MSG. And people have dismissed the allergy thing.

However I have not had an episode since the KP nuts. I avoid anything that says it has MSG in and I've been ok. This is NOT a placebo effect.

I have not been tested as I feel that bad after having anything that says MSG that I wont take the risk. It may NOT be MSG but it IS linked to MSG in that it may be another ingredient that is ALSO added when MSG is added.

I know MSG is just water sodium and glutamate

MSG is made from starch, corn sugar or molasses from sugar cane or sugar beets. MSG is produced by a natural fermentation process that has been used for centuries to make such common foods as beer, vinegar and yogurt.

I'm ok with yoghurt I'm ok with cheese however one bottle of smirnoff Ice which I used to drink a lot of will now give me a two day hangover

It could also be just from what its been made from. One supply may be ok and another may not.

I'm not taking the chance

The problem is that it crosses the blood brain barrier quite easily* and so some people are sensitive to this, I know that I will wake up at 4 or 5 am with a racing heart beat and a temperature whenever I have large amounts of MSG from Chinese food

* there was concern in the late 70's about the fact that it may also cross over from the placenta to the foetus via the same route but it was shown not to

You've got a mild peanut allergy.

While you cannot be allergic to MSG (it's actually impossible), MSG can increase the body's sensitivity to other allergens. Given that you've only had a problem when eating KP peanuts it's fairly safe to assume that you have a mild peanut allergy and the MSG acted as a trigger for this. The answer? Don't eat nuts that are coated in MSG.
