For those in/close to Hemel Hempstead...

Hi,

Does anyone know of a good place in/near Hemel where one can park the car and watch the sunset? I'm struggling to think of anywhere without buildings/trees/something else blocking the view... Ivinghoe Beacon/Dunstable Downs are a little too far away.

The Downs are by far the best place, you need the height. Everything else around is a little bit too flat.
The downs aren't exactly far though !!! Just up the A5, about 10 minutes drive tops.

Actually it is not half as bad as people make out :) It was a sort of 70's council house explosion but with house prices for a 3 bed semi averaginf 190k or so it can't be THAT bad.

Having lived in Watford for a pretty long time (10 years) and then having moved out towards StAlbans / Hemel (for 6 years) I prefer this area to Watford by a large margin.

I even prefer to shop in Hemel these days to Watford. It is closer, quieter and cheaper.
 
In St. Albans around the Three horseshoe pub on the Hatfield road isn't too bad. Seen a few lovely sunsets there lots of fields and green lanes to walk down as well.
 
Dunstable downs for the win.. Also check the clappers or wendover .
Also deacon hill between barton le clay and hitchin .

Im quite often up the downs on the bike or up in the car taking photos .

Barton le clay is lovely. I won a goodie bag from MBR by corectly identifying Barton Le Clay from a snip of ordance survey mapping - you had to go there to pick it up mind :)

Oh come on now, no need to defend it ;)

I live in Berkhamsted and that is getting just as bad as Watford nowdays. In all honesty though, Hemel isn't that bad anymore, it certainly used to be worse.

back on topic, another vote for Dunstable Downs, or suprisingly the unmentioned Ashridge woods - lots of open fields around there!
 
I'm from Prestwood so I'm about 30mins from Hemel and I don't think its so bad.

Its worth the trip purely for the fun of negotiating the magic roundabout. :D

Seriously though the shopping centre isn't bad now although its still nowhere near as good as the Harlequin in Watford.

Not particularly close to Hemel but there is always Coombe Hill over in Wendover with the war memorial on top. Thats always good for a view.

Berko is pretty tame !
The Rex is the best cinema within sensible driving distance too.
 
Head toward Aylesbury, and turn off to go to Halton. You drive up a hill on a country road and the views are excellent !!!!
 
Thanks for all the replies, they're much appreciated. Looks like the Downs/Beacon will be the best option - now I just need to wait for the weather to cooperate... :D
