Apparently I've been driving around in a SORN'd car with no tax for the past 11 and a half months - at least thats what the DVLA think!

I've driven past numerous ANPR cameras and I'm sure I've passed a DVLA tax van once too and I've had no comebacks.

I bought the car last December from a dealer who must have SORN'd it to get the tax back. I bought a tax disc from the post office using the V5 the morning I picked it up which expires 30/11/06. As I hadn't had a reminder, which I thought was a bit odd, I "renewed" online last week and received a disc this morning with an expiry of 31/10/07, so I was being screwed for an extra months tax.

I rang up to complain and they told me they have no record of the previous tax and their records show the car as SORN'd for over 12 months! I've now got to send them copies of all my documents and tax discs with a letter of explanation and they will issue me a tax disc with the correct expiry date!

If they haven't caught up with me in 12 months, having covered about 18000 miles, I doubt you'll be had bringing your new car home.

story doesn't surprise me in the least - the only department that seems to have its head vaugely screwed on is the one issueing points :(

but you just know that the one time you drive without a valid tax disk you will be caught!

Guy who services our cars...

He picked up a customer's car from their house to take back to his garage to carry out its service. On the way back to his garage he was pulled over by the police as the car wasn't taxed. Think he was fined etc for it whilst the customer himself wasn't.

Kind of his own fault because he should have had his trade plates on it whilst taking it to the garage, but still.

If you renew online be sure to print out any confirmation emails etc. A guy in MRC ended up with a court summons for having no tax even tho he renewed online!

He'll have been done for failure to display a valid tax disc, more than likely, rather than for not purchasing tax.

You will still be collared for failure to display if pulled over..

My tax ran out in July this year, but around April I got a letter saying I was driving around with no tax! When I called them they said they had no record of my tax disc so I had to photocopy it and send it in and all was fine. A pain in the neck really, I felt like enclosing a bill for 'administration costs' as I'm sure they'd do the same!

Guy who works in the office below me stupidly parked on a single yellow with expired tax outside the office, by midday he had been clamped & a fine is winging its way to him I believe.
