I need to upgrade my old fuseboard to one of them new consumer units and have had a quote for the whole work to be carried out for about £260 inc parts. Is this about right or am I getting ripped off? Not sure how many phases it has but its a fairly large house (6 bedrooms 6 floors).

Cheers

I'm not a professional electrician, but I rewired my home a few years back. The consumer unit and all breakers was not much short of 100 squid. Took me quite some time to rewire the consumer unit.

My opinion? It sounds a good price, possibly cheap!

Get another quote?

Thats reasonable I suppose, parts will be about half of that cost, so £130 labour is a bit steep, but thats to be expected.

Well I'm in the process of getting more quotes but they cant come till the end of the week and i need this done proto with the certificate. At first it seemed to be a good price then i checked the parts prices and £160 for labour seemed a bit steep!

It's the going rate though surely?

Any chance he could be a cowboy then?

Would'nt say that, depending on the size of the CU i might go that low. 160 for labour is'nt so bad tbh, while its not that complicated it does take a fair bit of time, remember hes gotta isolate the old unit, remove it thus disconnecting all the circuits and put the new one in plus reconnect all the circuits and every now and then you gotta deal with the previous mojos quality wiring and work as well.

Not sure how many breakers and circuits going to need, the guy just came and had a look and sent us a letter with the quote. They will provide us with the certificate required for the new combi boiler that is going to be fitted. The plumbers wouldn't fit it untill the electrics were upgraded.
