I need to buy my own car because of a change of job soon and i've always liked the Ford Focus. I will be using it mainly on motorway roads for daily commute and currently have a 2.2 diesel company car.

I need my new car to be economical and reliable and I have been looking at getting a diesel focus either 2 litre or the 1.6 model. Can anyone recommend which one I should go for? Is one any more reliable than the other? I think the 1.6 is more economical than the 2.0 litre?

Should I go for the Zetec S model or Titanium?

I'm assuming Mk.II due to the lack of a 1.6TDCI Mk.I?

As far as economy goes, i'd really go for the 2.0 out of those. The 1.6 is likely to be a bit... gutless and as a result, you'll find yourself having to use more effort to get it moving how you'd like it, which is only going to eat into the fuel economy you'd have saved.

I have to admit though, when I was looking at these a year or so ago I never even considered the TDCI Focus, mainly because the 2.0 petrol will still give you circa 40MPG without the drawbacks of a diesel.

I read some reviews which give the 1.6 TDCI around 70mpg? So between the two if it came down to reliability would the 2.0 litre or 1.6 be the best?

I'm looking at one around a year old by the way but don't know what MK the model number is.

With the mk2's my boss at work had a 1.6D and averaged high 40's over it's life mainly commuting from the south lakes to Skipton. One of the sales guys has a 1.8d mk2 and that's averaging mid 50's over its life for more mixed usage. Both drivers don't tend to hang about on A roads and cruise at 75-80 on the motorway.

I've got a 1.6 TDCi and, in terms of power, 110bhp is plenty for a car like this. You do have to drive it hard to get the performance out of it though and this will harm the MPG, especially around town. 70mpg is a pipe dream but 60mpg on a run is achievable.

I have to say, it's been a fantastic car. It just does everything well and has been completely faultless. After a year of my abuse it's just gone through the MOT first time aside from a number plate light. Main dealer servicing is cheap. It's a shame it's going on eBay tomorrow :p.

If you're buying used, I wouldn't restrict yourself to the 2.0 or 1.6, just go for the best deal.

My mums got the 1.6 TDCi, same 1.6 engine as in the 207 (i think) and other peugeot models IIRC.

Not the quickest of cars but it is more than capable every day and on the Motorway.

She went from a 306 HDi to this, and she MUCH prefers the Focus.

To misquote that Jack Nicholson character in that film with Tom Cruise....

PROOF? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE PROOF!!!

Son, we live in a world where
mpg must be guarded.

Who's gonna do it? You?

I have more responsibility
than you can fathom.

You weep for MPG
and I curse that Duratec.

You don't know what I know.

And my existence,
while grotesque to you, saves mpg

But deep down, in places
you don't talk about at parties, -

- you need me to talk about mpg!

We use words like
honour, code, loyalty.

They're the backbone of our lives.
You use them as a punchline!

I haven't the time or inclination
to explain myself -

- to a man who needs my explanation -

- but questions the way I do it.

Better just to thank me.

Or pick up a diesel and save some mpgz.

But I don't give a damn

what you think you are entitled to!

- Did you say that it doesn't do 40mpg?

- You're goddamn right I did!

I had a mk2 1.6 TDCI a few years ago, was fine for power, sure it wouldnt win any races but economy wise it average 44mpg around town which was great.

By comparison my ST and 330Ci barely managed 20mpg, and my current run about a 1.3 Fiesta only manages 38mpg so the Focus 1.6 TDCI is very good.
