Like the look of these and providing an insurance quote comes out reasonable I may be looking at one of these at the weekend. A few questions:

What should I look out for?
How reliable are the engines (looking at one at 100k+ mileage which is about 60k more than I have ever owned before)
How economical are they? I was hoping to save some fuel costs but i'd be saving £3k+ compared to what I hope to get for my Clio 172. As long as it isn't obscene it should be fine.
Anything else I should be aware of?

hgf common problem
make sure you get the metal impella in the water pump (plastic ones brake)
about 20-30 mpg i image

Fuel ranges from low 20mpgs average to pushing 30mpg on motorway.

Look for usual mayo in oil for signs of HGF, but generally the V6s are pretty bomb proof. Mileage doesn't bother them.

Something to do after you get it is to replace the crappy plastic water pump with a metal one. The plastic ones fail and cause catastrophic HGF.

ED: ROFL - basically exactly what the above said :p

from low 20s? you're having a larf? :p

i average high teens but do a lot of short journeys from cold in a very hilly area. It'll do low 30s on a run.

The water pump and housing is a common failure, most people only mention the pump though. Just keep your eye on your coolant levels and change the pump for a metall impellared one.

Bottom end failure rears its ugly head quite often but that's due to user negligence usually and is a very instant thing, so if it's not happened when you look at it, it's not gonna hapen unless its your fault. Keep the oil topped up to just ABOVE maximum, not below. This stops the oil surge from hard cornering leaving the pickups without oil. Check the oil regularily.

Good cars, awesome sound, decent pace and good handling, especially with a few choice mods (st220 brakes cost all of £50 to add on, some decent shocks and springs etc)

Need any more help give me a shout :)

Tom.

Faults:

Change water pump as suggested.
Bottom end failure is spun crank brearings caused by the oil pickup running dry on long right-handed corners, ST200 seems more susceptible to this.
Head Gasket blowing- sounds like exhaust manifold but it is usually head gasket.
Alernator, light comes on at high revs; a pig to fit.
Lack of power caused by IMRC (Inlet Manifold Runner Control) not opening the "secondaries", strangling the engine at higher revs.
Front wheel bearings,
Broken front springs.
Brake judder- usual warped discs.

Usual Modeo suspension things wishbones and drop links.

Don't worry about mileage too much, but check the above points. Great cars and a lot of car for the money now.
Make sure you get one with the bodykit (RSAP) there are non-kitted ones around.

As above you can fit MK3 Mondeo brakes using Focus ST170 4 stud discs, but old calipers don't need to come off ST220 as all mk3's have the same disc size and calipers, even the 1.8!!!! It's just the pad compound is different on the ST220.
