Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Hmm, said it before, and I'll say it again...Need to get out of IT Support, just not feeling the love anymore.

Just being offered an interview would be a dream at the moment, so many applications just going unanswered :(

Heh following that I passed a phone interview for o2 and now have a face to face interview tomorrow. Seems a bit more intense than other retail jobs I've had.

We want to meet the real you during your event which is why we’d like

you to show us how you would fit into O2 by sharing with us something

that is important to you. This exercise will let us see how passionate you

are and how you would transfer that into life in O2. On the day it’s up to

you how you do this, you may bring along something to help you or you

may want to just tell us all about it; both ways are fine - it’s what suits

you best.

Please think about something you are passionate about – it can be anything
at all. It may be sport or gardening, technology or entertainment; think about
what really interests you. Once you’ve decided, please come along on the
day and tell us about it. We want our Assessors to be inspired by you and
your subject. Aim to make them so interested, they may want to try it as
well.

You’ll have ten minutes to share your passion. Please involve your

Assessors in any way you like and do feel free to ask questions. Think

about what information you may need from them and how you can bring

your subject to life for them.

Good luck and enjoy!

Decisions, decisions!

Hi guys/gals

I might possibly be looking to get out of the IT Industry, or atleast the helpdesk side of it. My issue is, my CV is practically catered for it, so how would I go about making it more generic? Main thing to change would be my personal profile, everything else job wise should relatively stay the same presumably?

Started the day off by applying for 13 jobs - getting desperate now haha. The job centre continue to try to find me 8 weeks work experience in the worst places, they asked me yesterday if I would be willing to travel to a place which would involve 4 buses there and 4 back...

Thanks :) Just need to prepare myself, not sure what to expect since it's my first proper interview since graduating. The agency lady said I'll need to brush up on my networking..

Yeah...'Networking'. Ask them what part of networking you need to brush up on and they'll go 'duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh'.

:p

Today marks six months on the dole, with 157 jobs applied for. Of the three interviews I've had in the last four weeks, none have got back to me. I have heard from elsewhere that the Aberdeen phone interview company has filled the post via a different agency, so has not told mine. The Wrexham job was offered to (surprise) the young candidate, as opposed to either of the fifty-somethings. However, I'm told there's an issue with the winner and it's not final yet. Although it probably is. The Bristol job is in limbo because the intervewer is on paternity leave. I have another interview in Manchester on Friday.

Undergrad was Politics and Masters in Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict (found it massively interesting but a little bemusing to see where to take it).

I like the idea of looking for work experience though, will investigate that further. Have to sign on tomorrow (sadly as its was no fun before) but will see if they have any sensible suggestions too.

Last thing I have to try out is do a bit of volunteering as the local volunteer centre is offering out plenty things to do which might give me a few ideas at a guess.

Apologies for late response - jsut saw this.

I'm sure there's a fair bit of work in the area of your Masters. Any large business (institution or producer) with operations in countries where war or terrorism is prevalent might have divisions that might be interested in your background. Areas like insurance, oil and gas, banking, government, etc. could be a start. Sounds quite vague, but it's worth following up.

A mate of mine has just done an MPA and is looking for work in a similar area. For example, most investment banks will have teams focusing on maintaining relationships (and to a large scale running PR campaigns) with local governments, authorities and institutions in "unblanaced" markets and regions, and my mate is trying to go down that route.

It's normally a good idea to figure out which type of firm you want to work for and in which industry, and then go from there - i.e. do you want to work for a large firm in London, or would you want to work locally somewhere abroad. Once you've settled on these kind of decisions, then it's much easier to plan you path.

I'm debating whether or not to follow my old Art/drawing routes...Is it worth it do you think? Bearing in mind I'm 26 now, and not done anything Art related qualification wise since secondary school.

I've always liked drawing, just not had the time in past years to follow on with it...I also like the idea of concept design (for films/games/anything)...How would one go about finding out more details?

Would you want to study it a bit more? Or just get stuck in? I've always been skeptical about studying Art (especially at higher education), I think you'd be better off starting a blog/portfolio and just practice.

I could study at home. Ideally, I would love to land a job where they just teach me on the go, however I know that is extremely unlikely (read: impossible) :p

The portfolio mention is a good idea, it's something I just need to sit down to every evening and crack on with something...I kind of prefer the idea of digital art, but again not sure where to go on that. I just feel doing what I'm doing now is a waste, I'm on helpdesk work because it's what I happen to 'know' if that makes sense?

Ironic, I started a year of Digital Art at uni and I've got interviews coming up for helpdesk/support :p

Heh :)

I should have gone to Uni really after school, just never pursued it. I was meant to do A-Level Art in sixth form but it didn't run and no one told me. So I panicked, and went to my hobby (IT)...Been there ever since.

Hell, I was in the same position when I created this thread back in 2009 :o
