Forgot how bad job searching was :(

^^

Was working offshore with a Baker Wireline Crew last month, seemed like a good bunch of guys and had positions going for Offshore guys and Field Specialists.

It might be cold and rainy up here but Abz is a good place to be. Plenty of bars, sound people (an OcUK drinking contingent ;)) and lots of nice young girls :D:D

Got an interview for an apprenticeship by the third-party college on Monday doing IT focusing on security and virtualisation which would be ideal.

Also have an 'ASDA Magic Day' interview on Tuesday, getting desperate.

Used to work for Baker in IT. Decent company but be aware it's a huge US based corporation and it does suffer from that sort of culture/attitude which some people don't get on with.

But they do have a huge range of businesses so you'll get some great experience in the industry and they were always pretty good at offering internal secondments to other locations if traveling is your sort of thing.

Just that things can take a long time to progress due to all the policies, procedures and general bureaucracy so don't get too worried if you don't hear back immediately after your assessment.

I gave up with job titles long ago :p HR Departments make them as they go along these days I'm certain of this :D

I can honestly say I don't know what my official job title is :)

I think I have an hr title which is massively general like it specialist or something, but then withing my section my banding would probably have another title, and then I'd have a specific one relative I what work I'm doing at the time.

The weirdest part is that the Job advert when I applied for my current position had one title, the interviewer mentioned another title and the title on my ID card is something else!

The mind boggles :D

talk to me about Brass Rings?

I had a quick google but didn't find my answer, so so so many jobsites and adds have 'brassring' in the title, is it a company? Some web system lie SAP? or ???

Brassring is the recruitment IT system for Logica I believe. Logica are a decent sized consultancy firm. Worked with a lot of their staff and been on training courses where they have also attended.

Comes across as a competent company that won't drain your soul with working 100 hour weeks, and still seems to have good benefits.

Whoever owns or started it, it's used by a lots of other companies as well, but each in its own silo. Covance (who do work in pharma and the like) use it as well, for example, and I'm sure I've gone through for at least one other similar company.

Thanks (and the other posters) so it's a back office application that they use?
I've seen it on BP, Shell, Halliburton and other engineering sites.
Just kept coming up in the URL and I thought hmmm what is this!?!?

I would guess it's a third-party agency which acts as an employment agency, but only for certain companies. Each company gets a dedicated service, which is separate from all the others. You only (AFAIK) end up on Brassring when applying for jobs found directly on company sites. Even if you sign up to Brassring as an applicant, you can only see the jobs for the company you signed up through.

Been looking for a job for a couple of months now. Things might be looking up as I've been invited for the first stage of ICT Professional within the NICS. Got an aptitude test on Friday. Any tips? :)

I'd never heard of them before but it appears to be a recruitment solution - the website gives lots of nice sounding ideals but without looking into it further I couldn't tell you how they go about it.

I was once told that if someone gets made redundant then that job title goes with them too so when they hire someone new to do the same job it has to be a different title as well?

This probably explains why job titles are so bizarre :p

If someone is made redundant that means the job no longer exists in theory - if it did they wouldn't be made redundant, they'd be being dismissed for "insert reason here". That's why there has to be a "different" job created - it sounds like sharp practice if it's to do the same job but with a different title. If a new job is being created then it should normally be because the original job isn't needed but perhaps the company has realised that some of the role still requires fulfilled - possibly at a different grade/payscale but needs done nevertheless.

If you get that job new offer i'd certainly be going to your manager and saying i know your offering more, so pay up or im leaving!

I'm a bit late to this but if I had another job lined up I think I'd be informing the manager/HR/senior management of the situation and making it clear that I was distinctly unimpressed by this approach. However even if they offered to match the salary I doubt very much I'd consider staying - the company clearly doesn't value me as it should and they've already displayed a poor attitude to staff management and retention. If they've got to be forced into acting acceptably then what is to suggest they won't simply do the same again in the future.

Busy making some mock newsletters for my interview tomorrow, also waiting to hear if I get a 2nd interview for a graduate role. The first interview seemed to go well, and they were glad that I have IT skills, as they have a shortage of that within the company. Seemed a nice place so got my fingers crossed.

Things are starting to heat up.

Received a call from a travel company regarding an application support role which sounds interesting.

Also have my final interview with a software company tomorrow.

Hope I'm offered at least one of the jobs lol

Well I'm waiting to hear back from my 2 interviews now, probably towards the end of this week. Interviews just a bit too late to stop me having to wake up at 5am 5 days a week to work at the Royal Mail sorting office :(. Hope I get offered one so I don't have to do it for a month :D
