Hi and welcome to the forums. :)

Unfortunately looking at the cpu support list for your board the answer is no. It will not even take one of the older quad cores. The 945 chipset is ancient now and if you really want/need a upgrade it's new pc time i am afraid.

thanks for the welcome :)
the thing is that my pc is 2 yrs old i know thats old in the pc world but would updating the mobo be enough as money is a bit tight new pc may have to wait :(

The thing is, if you want to change cpu then you will have no choice but to change the mobo as well. Your current mobo was already old tech when you got it as 945 chipsets were released in 2005.

You could get a AMD Athlon X2 and AM2+ board for less than £100 and use your current DDR2 in it.

never worry m8 just need to get the thinking cap on and see were i go from here
new mobo & cpu or new pc ??

The thing is it's a bad time to buy a new pc over the next six months or so as both AMD and Intel are replacing all of their current sockets.

Intel.

Socket 1156 (Core i3/i5 and some i7) is to replaced very soon (next couple of months) by socket 1155. Despite only being a single pin difference, cpu's will not be interchangeable between sockets.

Socket 1366 (core i7) is to be replaced by socket 2011 in Q3 next year.

AMD.

In Q2 next year they lauch the Bulldozer cores which are going to need their own new socket, rumoured to be AM3+.

This is why i suggested a budget build using a Athlon ll X2 and a AM2+ mobo so that you could use your existing ram. Not only is it cheap, it's also a upgrade for you as well.
