Ordered an Overclockers "Titan Goliath" i7 setup today and upgraded it to a Radeon 5870.
Planning to test the system to the max when i get it of course but as i've been out of the gaming loop for a couple of years (apart from TF2) which couple of FPS games can you recommend for xmas pressies, gameplay is important of course remember! Dont want all show and no go. :D

Thanks and Merry Xmas.

CoD 4 (Still worth it)
Crysis + Warhead
Orange Box (Hl2 Episodes + Portal)
L4D2
Killing Floor

Although It's not a fps, Mirrors Edge may be worth a go.

Thanks.
I have the Orange Box and i'm a CS player from beta days, must get back into CS Source though.
MW2 and L4D2 then maybe, Crysis seems fairly popular and what about Farcry 2? I used to quite like Farcry now i think on...

Reason i went for that rig is because building my own was no cheaper than this one on the weekly offer. In the past i've built every PC i've had (plus other family members) but i've had laptops for the last 3.5 years and dont quite have the inclination to build my own when thats available at the right price.
I had thought of the i5 rig you linked and it was slightly cheaper but not a great deal cheaper.
I'm also looking to take some raw digital video of the family from DV tape and tweak it and put it on DVD so it will get a work out outside of games as well. ;)

Crysis is the real sequel to farcry imo. The publisher or whatever of farcry just used the farcry name to market 'farcry 2', since apart from the name and possibly some storyline ties its a completly new fps to farcry 1.
farcry 2 is still a good game, but it didnt sit to well with a lot of people.

your rig will be able to blow everything away with ease.

any reason you chose a i7 rig over a i5? also building your own rig should have saved you a bit of cash.

come the new year im gonna pick up this beast of a bundle. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-012-OB
I too recently ordered this rig, it's awesome for the price. Last week it was on offer, saving £40 on current price and only £70 more expensive than the components alone.

Considering some companies charge this sort of money just for an overclock service, with the excellent build, super tidy cabling etc, there didn't seem much point wasting time building it myself.

Can't believe the difference from my old AMD XP2400 single core system.

Well mine was ordered yesterday at 4pm and i now have an email to say its been shipped already, although the website is still showing no 5870's in stock.
I also had a Corsair H50 waterblock fitted instead of the air cooler and went for a WD Caviar black 500Gb drive.

How does MW1 compare to MW2?
Likewise L4D1 compared to L4D2?

Thanks.

fair enough. video encoding is not something ive ever done,or know how! but from what ive heard the i7 is quite a bit better than the i5 at it.

Are you planning to clock the rig any further than the 3.4gig?

Not in the short term but i may do later on.
I've been into overclocking in the past, my last desktop was an Opteron 146 2GHz which i think i got to 2.8GHz, never quite made the 3GHz. :(
My mother in law has it but she wants me to sell it as she just bought a laptop last week (i'm her IT support so it might appear on MM).

Just a thought....with something like L4D2 or MW2 whats the crack with buying a retail game in a shop compared to buying it via Steam? If i buy it retail when installing will it just automatically pick up my Steam account and install it to that same Steam directory on my hard drive so it appears in my games list plus its updated via Steam automatically and I can just copy my Steam folder to back it up like i do with my current CS:S, TF2 etc?
Or do i need to buy it through Steam and d/l it for this to be the case?

Try doom3 with all settings to ultra and supersampling switched on in videocard settings.
Also go into the config folder and change the resolution to your monitors native if higher than 1600x1200.
Cheap on steam and looks, plays fantastic.
