FPS players: How many of you use the arrow keys to move ??

My current set up. Mainly used for COD games atm but most FPS' fit into it.

Looks like you have to use your middle finger for crouch as well as forwards and back? Seems a bit odd especially if its a game where crouch button needs to be held down. Each to their own :p

In the early days (1998-2003 ish) I was an Arrow Keys guy, but I switched to WSAD circa '04 because it meant I had easier access to more keys. Took me a bit to get used to it but I've never looked back since!

i used to have a standard keyboard which also had an arrow key set under the left shift key, which is what i used to use back in the Half-Life 1 days. that got a little grubby though so got a new keyboard and have used WASD ever since.

My ring finger taps the button over my middle finger and the crouch and prone are toggles. Jump gets me out of the crouch or prone, too.

I used arrow keys to start with (Doom etc) but switched to TFGH in 1997, much better IMO due to access to other keys.

I do sometimes use WASD for single player FPS simply because I can't be bothered remapping the keys (especially poorly designed games were the hints are hardcoded to a specific key).

I do. Although trying wasd at the moment. Not completely sold on it, Capslock, tab and ` all screw up online games and arent really usable so keep shouting in caps at people or dying repeatedly as ive brought up the console.

I've not used them since mouse look was invented.

Honestly going back to games like Doom or Heretic i don't understand how i could play them without mouse look and strafe

All Doom engine games have always had left right mouse look. Just needs to be enabled in the setup.

i used to use the num pad myself back in the day, except I'd use 8 and 5 for forwards&back and del for crouch and enter for jump. ended up switching to wasd though as my crummy keyboard back then would only allow a couple or maybe 3 (cant remember exactly) keypresses simultaneously on the numpad - not really a problem on todays fancy keyboards though but I'm used to wasd now :)

I use WASD, used to use arrow keys many years ago but WASD lets you use a lot more nearby button combinations. Think I switched around the time I started playing CS 1.5.

Quake (I) taught me mouselook, up until then I'd always used arrows. I tend to use ESDF tho, esp with games that have lean, so more keys are within easy reach.

Yup I've used the arrow keys in FPS games since the days of Unreal and Quake, has always done me good. Use all the keys in a radius around the arrow keys for other functions. Example of my cod setup (and near enough the same for every fps game I play) would be:

Right Ctrl - Jump
Shift - Use
Enter - Sprint
Del - Depends on game but usually a function specific to the game, example being Crysis alt fire modes
End - Reload
Pg Dwn - Grenade
Ins - Crouch
Num1 - Prone
Num4 - CoD hold breath, other games specific functions
Num7 - Either specific game function or melee if Mouse 3 is already in use
Num5 - Usually flashlight/binoculars depending on game
# - Medkits/Binoculars/Nightvision/Flashlight/other game specific action
' - Medkits/Binoculars/Nightvision/Flashlight/other game specific action
] - Medkits/Binoculars/Nightvision/Flashlight/other game specific action
Insert/Home/Pg Up - Anything extra specific to the game

Use WASD for TPS/RPGs though.

Up and Down arrow for forward and back. Rctrl and Numpad 0 for straffe left and right. Rshift for crouch. Numpad 1,2,3,5,6 for weapons. Numpad 4 throw grenade, END for prone or in the case of BFBC2 spotting. I have an MX518 that I use for other functions.

I've always used arrow keys & hate it when I "preview" a game & have to use the w etc keys b4 redefining..

Right Ctrl - Jump
Enter or middle mouse/side mouse buttons Use
Num 0 Run
middle mouse is reload if not use
right shift Crouch

Also I invert vertical look & will never play a game which won't let me change this or any other options.

Arrow keys are easier anyway as if you get stuck you can just look at them & there's a big arrow telling you which way to go.

WASD don't work for me as I've got a scouse keyboard & it says W AAA instead. :(

WASD for me.
but i am missing the little finger on my left hand so it can get awkward when crouching in a game
