Hi

I have an amd 64bit 3800+
1gig of ram
BFG geforce 7300gs graphics card.

In counter strike source i seem to get 20fps on maps like de_dust, i'm not sure why. I have the latest nvidia drivers from the official site, and i have fps_max set to 100, and rates cl_cmdrate 100 etc etc...

any ideas why the fps is so poor?

it seems to vary on maps too, on one map I was on about 50fps until battle, but de_dust was around 20-30 the whole time. Im pretty sure it should be higher, as the recommended settings in CS were all set to high.

Also,
In team fortress classic the fps seems to be capped at 60fps, with fps_max uncapped... makes no sense

any ideas?

You probably have vsync on for the max at 60 thing... whata re the exact settings you are using? res/hdr/aa/af etc.?

Your graphics card is very low spec in comparison to the rest of your system. Other people would be able to advise you better on what to get, but from what I've heard either the 7600GT or X1950Pro are good reasonably priced cards.

vsync is off,

res 1024 x 758 in CS, no AA, AF

although the graphics card is a budget one, my crap geforce go7500 or whatever it was I had on my laptop seemed to run CS:S better than this!

Its meant to average around 80fps with my setup, so I read on some benchmarking site

Don't think you'd be able to play Source at high settings with a 7300GS ArmyofHarmony. Might be worth investing in something a little bit better for a more playable framerate. You'd find your FPS often worsens online, choke and lag also does it.

play in 8x6 and turn ALL the details off, and put fps max on. its the only way to play with a card like that. I may suggest putting a config on like caseys config. that should get you a constantly nice FPS.

Source is also very sensitive to CPU and Memory bandwith, im guessing your RAM is at 200mhz?

By turning everything down and playing in 8x6, I get good fps when everybody is stationary... when people start moving it drops rapidly!

now, im sure my framerate wasnt too bad on a crap geforce go5700 which I had on my laptop...

CS:S is a really old game now anyway! surely this should run it reasonably

You played CS:S on a go5700?

Try different servers, i always found that crap servers gave me bad fps.

What tickrate are the servers you play on got?

I have played it on a TI4200 before and a 6200, ok it wasn't great but it played fine. The HL2 engine scales very well.

A 7300GS should be able to do medium settings at 1024x768 "fine"..

if you think you are getting server lag, try cl_smooth 0 and cl_smoothtime 0.01 in the console, the image you see is exactly where they are then (because your CPU is capable).

because source is CPU intense, the rest of your spec should bring up the fps a fair bit (as i found with a geforce 4!!)

also try this: type cl_showfps 2 into console, and if your minimum FPS is 0 after a while, you may hav a problem with the card
