fraudulant claim made against me, what steps to take and what to expect.

My dad had this a few years ago where a claim was made against him with all the details of his car and an accusation of damage. Unfortunately for my dad there was CCTV to backup the claim - which was *really* strange because my dad was up north at the time and could prove it.
Turned out in the end when the police got involved that someone had stolen a car that was the same model/colour and had made copies of my dads number plates so they would't get done for anything.
Police eventually caught them and the claims against my dad were dismissed.
There are a lot of very dodgy scumbags out there.

It would have been a heck of a coincidence if the clone car was in the same car park at the same time as the original though no?
