Can you download a torrent copy and use the genuine key with it?

Did that years ago with Quake 3 when my disc snapped

yep, as we sorely found out when CK tried to use it, it can't be redeemed. I think all developers should start looking at making their games compatible with steam when releasing for PC, and thus providing cd keys with every game and latching onto the 'redeem' function. Irritating.

Plus they would have to pay Valve for that, afterall its Valve's bandwidth that would be used to send the game to everyone.
