Why is it that 0800 Free phone etc numbers are not "free" on mobiles? it just hit me the other day when i had to call an 0800 number for my Motorbike lessons.

because you are using a mobile network in which the network would be paying to carry your call. there are certain 0800 numbers that networks allow and some price plans that allow 0800 usage from the free airtime iirc.

0800 numbers were clamped down on as a lot of calling card services exploted this
