Free scanning to PDF (with OCR) on Windows 7

Maybe my google skills are just failing me.

I'm after a bit of software to scan from our hp scanjet 5590 (has a feeder) to PDF with OCR. The stock HP software does it, but does not work on windows 7, well at least I cannot getting it working for the life of me.

Any ideas?

do you want to scan handwriting or just just printed text?

Irfanview with free plugins will do it believe it or not. Fine for a page or two, but if you have a lot, maybe try VietOCR or something based on tesseract. The best desktop OCR is Abbyy Finereader.
