Of recent months, I have been trying to live in a "sustainable" way, like switching off the pc when not using it, recycling more, you know that kind of thing. (not quite turning Tree hugging Hippie just yet:) )

My boss recently asked me to get more info on how our company would become more socially responsible, and I stumbled upon a link that I thought was quite cool.
Basically they will be spreading out freebie goodies from companies that want to spread the word of their "green friendly" products.
I have been in contact with them, and they have quite an interesting and cool line-up of companies, that will be signing people up for "testing and spreading the word" of their goodies.

The site is not completely launched yet, so probably a good time to get in and be one of the first testers :)

You do realise constantly turning your pc on and off uses just as much power as leaving it on for an extended period of time?

Did i say I do it constantly.
Used to have it on 24/7 , but now only in the evenings when im home... smartass

You pointed it out as if it was a super thing to be doing to save the planet or something, like that recent "turn off your electrics" day or whatever nonsense it was.

That link is a good website though, fairly interesting. If you are interested in becoming more green, try PC recycling, though I'm assuming you use PCs there, we use a company in Ely and its not cheap, but its not overly expensive.

Yeap, there are a load of things were implementing, but I quite like the idea of this site.
Rewarding companies who do go green, by cashing in on the whole "viral marketing/word of mouth marketing" thing. The end consumer (you who sign up) gets to test out per say "M&S new organic cookies, and post on forums about it, tell your mates etc, without having to fill in questionnares and that kind of rubbish.

Complete myth. I started to turn my PC off during the day and only leave it at nights and i saved something like £70 for my next quarterly bill

I believe it comes from the same school of myth as the "Switching the machine on and off puts more stress on the computer components so they are more likely to fail".

explain the science behind that
I believe the theory is that the combined spike in electrical usage required to shut down and start up a computer as opposed to leaving it unused, and the stress placed on hardware during boot up/shut down levels out to make it uneconomical to shut down hardware when it is not in use.
