I heard that it's possible to travel and stay in foreign countries when working for certain charities. Has anyone here done something like this? How did you go about getting involved?

I realise that. I'm not work shy but I am in a rut. I'm jobless, almost broke and tired of living with my folks. I'm assuming that a charity is less likely to turn away the willing than any regular employer and if I can get a change of scenery out of the deal that'd be great.

Yes generally if you wish to volunteer for building programs in Africa etc, often you buy your own ticket alongside the charity and they'll provide food and shelter whilst you are out there while you work/build and then return home.

Its the best use of the charities money.

Don't think any places pay for you to go places, generally you have to raise a set amount for a place and they feed you and keep you while your out there working.

There are a couple of big organisations like the VSO that may help but other than that it's some hard searching to find other charities. Generally the smaller charities that do offer free volunteer work wills still want you to pay for your own food and maybe even accomodation. It's just very difficult to get past the pay to "volunteer" companies.

I made a similar thread a couple of months ago and got nowhere really. Unless you have skill or lots of money it's very difficult to find anything http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18052171

Having said that I did stumble across some websites that list freeish volunteer work and also your local library will probably have a few books on charities you may be able to contact. :) Unfortunately I can't find any links at the moment.
