free way of finding old war records??

been trying out these ancestry things, I don't talk to the rest of my family and am trying to find out more about my great-great grandfather.

I know for a fact he was awarded the MC in WW1 and had a mention in despatches, and was probably a Captain, the Hussars of some sort rings a bell... last name Dodge.

all these ancestry things are demanding a subscription fee to see documents, surely there is a free record of stuff like this??

Failing that any OcUK snoops would be appreciated :)

Yeah, most of them do unfortunately demand a subscription fee. You might be able to get it from the Library, they might have a subscription that you're allowed to use.

Alternatively, the National Archives have a record of absolutely everything, and this would be declassified by now. How much they'd charge for you to get it though is another thing altogether..
