A nasty looking minefield
Hello my friend has himself a dell pc.

Its a bog standerd pc which has been trundling on for several years.

When he came down this morning it would not boot.

Not matter what safe mode etc he went into, it would have the xp loading screen, give him a BSOD then restart.

This is triggering something in my memory but cant put a finger to it.

Any ideas?

cheers

Was hoping it wasnt that. :( It is only a 40gb hdd but like the muppet he is :p he has 3 years of important documents and no backups.

Is there anything I can do?

P.s I will ask him about the noises.

Any more suggestions people?

I do. Good idea. I will try that.

Im just hoping that it can be fixed....

His Dad is extremely influential, and with me going to university soon and needingf a job after that, he seems like a good man to impress ;)

Okay that sounded really mercenary.

But he is a cop and has got a really good reputation. His word is sacred. One word from him and im mad :D

What else could it be.

Could it be overheating..

3 years in dell case with hardly any ventiliations..

Could the dust have clogged anything :o making it overheat and corrupt...

:(

Im out of ideas

before letting it boot windows, get into the bios and check everything's working okay in there. You might even be able to check the temperatures.

Possible HD issue I agree, but on the few BSOD of death issues in XP for me it has always ended up being a RAM issue, but the fact that you don't even get into Windows does suggest HDD.

Do as suggested and check with a 2nd HDD, if its not that i'd investigate the RAM !

cheers will try that when I get home....

Heres hoping I can fix it.

I was reading the Car forum down the page and the dude who brought an M5. I want to be him one day :o

Hello back again.

Took the hard drive out and put it in my pc.
Same error :( definitly the HDD.

Is there anyway I can get the data.

I booted it up with my HDD and on loading screen asked me if i wanted to do a chkdsk on it. I did and it fixed some stuff. Still no luck though so it looks to be hardware.

Does anyone have any idea on how to get the information of or is it all lost.

Just downloaded GetDataBack for NTFS V3.03

so will give it a try.

My friends father is not happy. He blames his son  for a Maxtor hard drive built in the year 2001, in a dell pc with no ventiliation and covered in dust for breaking...... It was a timebomb.

cheers

p.s is my hdd set up correctly. Finding it extremely slow.

It is a SATAII Barracuda 320gb 7200.10 16mb Seagate
