My friend's car was clamped today - a few minutes before 5.

Called the number of the guys that clamped it (mobile number) - was told that now has to pay up £500 :

£100 for parking there (apparently private property)
£200 for clamping the car
£100 because they have to keep the car overnight (they close at 5)
£100 for collection

Surely, this is a complete scam?

Well .... he is paying a visit to the director of the company that towed the car - on his way there at the moment :p

Also they can't exactly be a big company, as soon as he called up they knew who it was - didn't need to ask for registration plate or anything "Oh - you're the guy with the BMW"

Deffo keep us informed, i want to know how this one ends.

£500 is absolutely ludicrous and i would fight them (not literally of course). If it was something like £50, fair enough, you won't be doing it again, but £500!!!
Yup...£50-£80 is still a lot but acceptable - £500 is absolutely ridiculous!

They also clamped some other cars, probably just towed his one because it looked the most expensive - just before 5 as they apparently close at 5 so they can charge £100 for holding it one day

I cycled past there after work today.. and there are signs on every lampost warning of clamping (says charge 300 quid for clamping, and extra for towed) so I'm not sure where he stands now :o

For all those who are confused...the car was towed, not clamped (ignore title) and by the time I posted at first , the car was already about 20 miles away.

The guy who runs it is storing it in a garden centre, as the address where the car is , is the same as his other business.

He has gone to pay the owner of the clamping company a visit at his home address, will find out tomorrow what happened :)

I'm pretty sure that for a car to be clamped/towed/ticketed there have to be signs up saying that it's illegal to park in the area and these actions will be taken. If there were no warnings, the people who took the car wouldn't have much to stand on.

There are signs up in the area (nearly every lampost) which do tell you how much it will cost if your car is clamped/towed. But then again he should be able to do something about it , as £500 is no way a reasonable amount to charge. Especially as lots of cars were parked in the same area , but his the one with the highest value got towed after a very short period of time. Taking this to court shouldn't be a big problem, as his wife is a lawyer, interesting to see what comes out of it in the end :)

He went there yesterday and broke in to where it was stored but couldn't get the car out for some reason.

So he is on his way now with another friend to sort it out - wonder what the outcome will be :)

He managed to get in, but couldn't get his car out.

He went there today with another mate to discuss the situation and ended up paying £500 via cheque after being confronted by a few huge guys and a dog :p He is cancelling the cheque and then seeing what happens from there.

lol should go back tommorow with more guys and a bigger dog

the outcome would be an interesting read :D

Not sure what he is going to do but he is furious ... and I gave him the director's address, will see what comes out of it in the end!

This guy's got bad luck :p

Yesterday his wife filled his car up with petrol (it's a diesel) and drove it till it stopped.

Going to cost him an absolute fortune to repair

pfft wont cost a mint, i've done that twice now in the van :D
just drain all the petrol out, refil with diesel and then turn over plenty to purge.
ps it'll smoke like **** for a while but it works no worries :)

Well apparently this has been tried, the engine won't start at all.
He has taken it to a BMW dealership and said repair would be anything from £4 to £10k as the engine might need replacing.

He cancelled the cheque and they haven't come back to him yet... :o
