Friends Tyres

Yes it would appear he is, so he's yet to be caught up in the whole 'If a tyre isn't made by Michelin, Continental or Pirelli and costs less than £100 a corner then it's rubbish' claptrap that permeates OCUK motors.

If your friend doesn't drive as some of us do and is happy to pootle along not stressing, not putting his foot down and slowing down when conditions deteriorate, then let him use whatever tyres he likes. I'm sure if he start to press on and starts 'making progress' or driving faster then, sure, those tyres will likely be exposed as not the best in the world, but many people are happy with cheaper tyres, knowing thier performance envelope is well outside their own abilities or desires. It's just some of the posters on this forum don't seem to realise that.

You can pootle as much as you like, if you have to perform an emergency stop then the difference in braking distance between a good and **** set of tyres is quite large.

Edit: why is the word cr** filtered out, yet Ace Modder can use the word "bloody" in big text in his signature

You can drive as defensively as you like, there's still that extra special kind of stupidity you can't account for on the roads.

And lets face it, if you're putting tyres that cheap on a "hot hatch" you're probably not driving all that defensively.

Most of that goes out of the window when you consider situations that you have no control of, it's all fair and well saying you don't race about but you could have someone pull out on you, a child could run out onto the road or you could aquaplane straight into a ditch. I don't think it's really practical to drive 40mph on the motorway just because there's standing water either.

Most people don't know their own limits or the limits of the tyre, they are just cheaping out and wouldn't change their driving depending on the quality of the tyre.

I can honestly understand someone putting cheap tyres on a cheap work hack but on a hot hatch its a little silly

Id just like to point out that stupid people are stupid and as much as i like to take the **** about linglong tyres id never use them.
Theres is some big brands out there that shell out rubbish tyres at decent tyre prices so its always good to read a few reviews first from people with the same car as you as just because a tyre is amazing on a fiesta st doesnt mean its any good on somthing as heavy as an st220.

What "Hot Hatch" does the said person drive?

Just had a look on camskill and noticed that they are the cheapest tyres for that size of car... there cheap for a reason

What's wrong with cheap NAND? Plenty of people have OCZ drives without a single problem! (except me, I don't do OCZ lol).

not as high a percentage as you would think as they have a very very high return rate.

anyway back to the subject at hand

op's friend be it andrew moore who happens to have the same car as the op is talking about or not should maybe part ex it in for somthing like a pink micra c+c as it seems that would be more up there street.

And far more don't even put that level of thought into it, happy to drive along the M1, in the rain, 1 foot from the car in front at 85mph on Lingling ditchfinders. This is becoming more and more of an issue as cars with bigger wheels become more popular. The average car 5-10 years ago had 14-15 inch wheels so even a decent tyre was only 40 quid. Now everything, even if it has less power than a lawnmower, is on 18-19 inch wheels where tyres cost a lot. So people buy these cars without checking the cost of owning them and then think 'arghghg' when its tyre time before opting for the cheapest they can possibly find.

Besides, the car in question is a hot hatchback, not the choice of potterers everywhere really, is it?

For the average Focus or whatever, decent tyres don't cost this. For a Focus on 14 inch wheels a set of Conti's or Goodyears can be had for as little as 50 quid a corner, fitted. So if you dont want big money tyre costs its easy to avoid them - choose a car which doesn't have enormous bling wheels.

Does seem daft that not many new cars use 195/50/15, tyres are ridiculously cheap in this size

I guess it's new car styling going the way of big rimz and bigger heavier cars need bigger brakes for stopping and they wont fit behind the tiny wheels.

Still remember my £35 continentals on my 106, can't argue with prices like that, the ling longs were only about £10 cheaper.
