On the road....
Well, I've just landed myself a "new" car.

Its a 1999 Mondeo LX TD Hatch, in some weird burgandy colour. it also has Air con. :)

The dealer I've bought it off is keeping it this week & doing the cambelt, sorting out the inevitible cracked bumper(!) and swapping the windscreen which has a nice large crack in it!

£1k with 6mths tax & a short warranty.

A bit more than I wanted to pay, but, tbh, after looking at 4 different Mondeo's today, all sub £1k, this one stood out by a long way.:)

Can't honestly say I'm looking forward to it, but, needs must.

40+ MPG I can't wait for!

I assume the A/C definitely works then :p

Bit of a downgrade from a BMW, but if needs must and all that :)

hmmm i'm all for mondeos, but the mk2 diesel is rooooooooooough! Also you bought the LX too! definitely not bargain of the century but it'll be economical and reliable for you I hope :)

For a 99 TD LX in good nick its a good price. You can't get much better for the money. Your car doesnt count becuase it's had 2 new engines, 4 gearboxes, 11 clutches and a new bodyshell or something since you bought it ;)

I paid more money than that, my 98 mondeo 2.0 LX which bar the cambelt (my fault for not getting changed) was EXTREMELY reliable for 15,000 miles only cost me £650 2 years ago with sub 100k miles

Also, on the note you started it on i've FINALLY got a court date to get my money back for the gearboxes / clutches etc :p

Choice between an equally tidy '99 Ghia Estate for £1495 or, the LX Hatchback for £995.

Both have aircon, which I did want, the estate was a 2.0 petrol.

As for diesel refinement, I've got a 12.6 litre straight 6 to play with at work.... ;):D

The object of selling my BM was to significantly reduce my running costs.

I've suffered the same diesel engine previously in an Escort TD and it was tolerable enough and more than worth it for the 45mpg I got from it! - I drove it with the hatred it deserved too! :D

£500 extra for some silly toys, big boot and a MPG hit? - no ta. ;)

Cheap, reliable a - b motoring - Pretty much my requirements mate. :)

The engines not refined, but, the rest of the car is more than upto the job.

As much as people knock the TD my old mans went from 18k when he bought it right up to 178k when someone wrote it off with naff all problems. Still on the original clutch, the original exhaust lasted 176k too which he was narked about when it got written off a couple of weeks after he got it replaced :p

Mondeo Ghia Estates is where it's at!

Hope you have lots of trouble free motoring out of this one mate, I havn't really had any issues with mine :) (touchwood)

Thats what I want to hear ! :)

I picked the TD engine as I know from my DHL courier days, you can't kill them (and believe me, I tried!!! ) ;):D

My Mondeo is almost on it's original exhaust too. Only the back box has been changed in the past and that is actually the part of the exhaust in the worst condition!

It's on about 135k now. The clutch is starting to get a little tired on it now though. It sometimes whines and I can feel the whine in the pedal. It's not slipping at all though so I am just driving it as normal.

Even the LX isn't that bad a spec. really and still very comfortable and easy to drive :)

I know you like to keep all your fuel receipts etc... so it would be interesting to know real life MPG figures for this old 1.8TD as it does get a bit of stick on here for poor economy.
