I need a new digital camera to cover general everyday use but mainly for my road trip around USA & Canada in September. I'm after a camera with a decent resolution, ~6x optical zoom and one which I can play with the settings on. My budget is in and around £200. The Fuji Finepix S7000 seems to cover all my needs and is within the price range. The XD cards seem to be fairly cheap too which is a bonus.

How does this camera perform compared to the competition? What are the other suitable alternatives?

Thanks :)

I've got one of these. They have good low light response because of the octagonal pixels and everything unfortunately this also has the effect of making the images grainy so you can't get down to individual pixels easily. The pictures look good from a distance though so depends what you are looking for - I think there probably would be something a little bit better for that budget.

Thanks. Looks like it's not the best available for the money. What would you recommend for around £200 then?

Not sure how it compares to the S7000, but check out the Fuji Finepix S5600

With the imminent launch of the H2 and H5, I imagine the Sony DSC-H1 should be coming down to not far off £200 in the near future, which gets you a lot of camera for your money. Check out the review and forum opinions at dpreview.com
