hey guys, so I'm currently running
  • rampage extreme 3
  • i7 980x
  • corsair h80i
  • 20 gig ddr3
  • 256gb 850 pro
  • 2x 1tb
  • corsair 1000w PSU
  • 1080ti
..system (apart from gfx) is old as balls, so i've been pondering an upgrade, i should point out i'm a fairly heavy system user, from games to vms and lots of things open at once...

Looking at the following as the potential fresh build since the current one will be getting donated to family(minus the 1080ti), but as i've not really kept up with pc hardware looking for some advice?

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £2,668.17 (includes shipping: £15.30)

To be honest a 8700k is a lot better value than the X99, you still get 12 threads at ~5Ghz, also you could put some of that saving on SSD instead of mechanical drives, because for a heavy user like you said, mechanical drives are very slow unless using them for long term storage only, the WD red drives are good for mechanical drives and some memory around 3200-3600mhz would be faster, also a seasonic prime PSU or EVGA P2 would be better.

I'm already on a hex core, didn't see the point in upgrading to the same core'd cpu, also I have a 500gb m.2 drive specc'd in there, is it not enough I wonder?

Just my opinion anyway, but I would think the 8700k, being the newest chip, would still be a lot faster than the relatively old chip you have there, depends how much you need more cores, but the 12 thread 8700k I would think would be very fast for everything and 700 cheaper than the one you listed. As I said with that 700 you could get SSD instead of that SSHD and still be loads cheaper.

Not sure how accurate this is, but looks like the 8700k would be a good upgrade over the CPU you have now : http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-980-vs-Intel-Core-i7-8700K/m3336vs3937

What? You are running a 980x now yes? So I said an 8700k would be quite a lot faster than a 980x, and massively cheaper than a 7920x, but then its completely up to you and what you require.

Would personally get Thread ripper for your cash

threadripper 16c32t, 64gb ram, better aio, 1tb ssd, 2x4tb hdd for raid 0/1, case with good airflow
all for ~£100 more than the intel spec
