I have my Honda up for sale for a very reasonable price. Naturally this price has attracted a lot of attention and I hoped to be rid of it soon but one thing that really annoys me is when guys who comes to look at it nit pick and try to knock you down a ridiculous price

Stupid remarks like "it's got a scratch in the door and the bumper is scuffed. I'm not too sure about the rear discs either, they look a bit rusty, that would mean £300 on new callipers, I'll offer you half what you're asking because I'm going to have so spend so much money on it"

?

I'm asking £1200 for a car that is in fantastic condition for 16years, what do you expect!? As if he is really going to spend any money on respraying such a cheap car. 1 year's motoring from it is good enough for me for what you're paying in my opinion.

Thats my rant for the day anyway, sorry :)

If it's got scratches and stuff it's worth spending time washing T cutting and waxing it, amke it look byootiful.

Of course people are going to use such things as bargaining chips... Wouldn't you?

Completely agree with you.

But its usually ill informed buyers who will comestically nit pick a 16 year old £1200 car. At that price and at that age, any buyer with any sense should be looking at mechanicals and any BIG BILLS on the horizon - not comestics. If it were me, I'd get the Dentmaster guys out, pay them £100-£150 or so, and give them a brief to tart up the car in any way they want, with a paint spray here, or paint spray there with an aggressive cutting polish. That way the car will look good and satisfy the 'don't have a clue about cars' brigade. You could also have some price printouts from companies selling OEM parts / discs etc. Will be a lot cheaper than dealer prices, and tell them that its a wear and tear item and that they should get a grip FFS!!!

It's not just you, a bloke came to look at mine yesterday and said it's pretty much what he was after, then proceeded to make me an offer (via eBay) for nearly a grand less than what it's up for, then offered me £50 more when I declined

i'm guessing the reason they mention it - is because its not mentioned in the ad when your selling it? (maybe you dont have enough room to mention it)

totally, that a fair price as well

like the guy who wanted to knock £1000 off the price for no MoT.....when we were prepared to put an MoT on it anyway

I wish I had taken pics to show you guys. I spent 5hours yesterday and another 2 today hoovering, washing, detailing and polishing. The thing feels like glass and shines like revor Nelsons head. The drivers door got keyed once though and the front bumper has usual scuffs on the corners. The rear arches have the tiniest bit of surface rust in them too (literally a 1cm & 3cm patch either side). Overall the body is fine and I have loads of receipts for big jobs like new exhaust, timing belts, downpipe, etc etc. Both parties that visited tried to knock me down too much and I replied that if it was perfect it would be going for a lot more than it is. But it isn't perfect, the price should have suggested to them it's not perfect before they drove all the way to come see.

No, faults were spoken about on the phone, I didn't sell it as being immaculate

Good idea! Thanks

I had similar issues when selling the 306. In the end I just said to a couple of them "No offence but your not going to find a better one within 50 miles without paying 50% more so take it or leave it" The guy that eventually bought it I just gave the keys and he went over it with a fine tooth comb whilst I went off and chatted to my neighbour about my new motor which I had picked up that night :D He came up and said "£800?" it was up for £850ono so the deal was done there and then.

My favourite incident though was when looking at a dealership at an Octavia. He wanted to have a look at my 306 as at that time I was still hoping to part ex it. Now I don't like to toot my own horn but my 306 was in bloody good nick. Not perfect but much better than average yet he sucked through his teeth and pointed at various things with his "business partner" before offering £500 but only to get the sale on the Octavia. His reaction to me being similarly anal over the Octavia making a big fuss over every mark (of which there were lots more than on my 306) until he cracked and said "what do you expect, its 5 years old?" I pointed at my much better condition 306 and said "well if thats in bad nick at nearly 9 years old I'd better give this one a miss hadn't I?"

I'm not normally a nobber but that guy got on my wick :(

It's a standard bargaining ploy - what were you expecting? You want the best price, the buyer wants to drive price down by making it look like you are overpricing. If you tried to trade it in at a garage they would do exactly the same.

I understand how bargaining works cheers, trying to take me for a tit though just annoys me. "Er, well I've seen one going for the same condition at nearly half your price" ..."well go and ****** well buy that one then!"

Quite. Never ceases to amaze me just how many people try and use that argument to knock a good price down.

Mind, it can be hugely simple. A girl I know in Wisconsin was selling her Olds Vista Cruiser Q-car (looked like a pile of ****, but was packing a worked 454ci monster motor), and a guy came along with a slightly scruffy Dodge Challenger running a tuned 440ci 'Six-Pack' motor. They simply swapped cars :)

I just put the price as no offers when I sell it. If they try and knock the price down for stupid things I just tell them to do one. Sold all my cars to first person that has looked at them so must be doing something right.

The best one I had was when I had my bmw on ebay. Worth £4500 at least which is what I got in the end but a few days before the auction ended some idiot emailed saying "I'll give you £2500 and bring the money to you today, let me know asap as I don't like being messed around". Haha do one, muppet.

What a tool!

Just say no if you don't like their offer

My god, I think you might have cracked it!
