Comedy Central plans to resurrect the Fox animated series "Futurama" with at least 13 new episodes to be produced.

Running from 1999-2003, the show created by "Simpsons" originator Matt Groening ran for 72 episodes and yielded a large and loyal cult audience which has resulted in solid DVD sales and good ratings for repeat episodes on cable.

The new batch is part of a deal the cable network made with Fox Television last year to pick up syndicated rights to the existing episodes. Comedy Central also had an option to air any new episodes produced.

New and old episodes will begin airing in 2008 on Comedy Central. Actors Billy West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio have agreed to return as voices for "Futurama."

Awesome or what!!!

Zoidberg is indeed the best :D

seem to recall Billy West quashing any rumours of a new season on his website/forum. what's the source for this info?

to be honest, i hope they don't do what they did with the Simpsons, and release a new season just because there's call for it. the 4 (or 5, however you count it) we have now are a stroke of TV, comedy and artistic genius, but they totally ruined the Simpsons, and i'd be quite annoyed if they did the same with my Futurama.

"After word from two voice actors had spread during the last two days, the news agency Reuters is now reporting that "Comedy Central has resurrected the former Fox animated series from "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. At least 13 new episodes will be produced."

They go on to quote David Bernath, senior vice president for programming at the network.

"We are thrilled that Matt Groening and 20th Century Fox Television have decided to produce new episodes of 'Futurama' and that Comedy Central will be the first to air them."
"There is a deep and passionate fan base for this intelligent and very funny show that matches perfectly with our audience, and it is great that we can offer them not just the existing library but something they've never seen as well."

A press release from Comedy Central dated June 22nd supposedly verifies this information but is not available to the public on their media website yet.

Update: It seems that some of these articles got some things confused. The 4 DVD movies which we reported about a few days ago will eventually be shown as 4 episodes each on Comedy Central. This makes the number of episodes 16, not 13. But as I understand it, there is no other new content other than those movies."

Yeah it would be nice to see some new episodes but I'd hate to see it go down the Simpsons route.

I wouldn't be too upset if there wasn't any more, Futurama has a great story arc and a nice conclusion as it is.
