Has anyone got a single core cpu running at about 2.78 with a 8800gtx card? If so, how well does Colin McRae - DiRT run in the 8car races?

I have a 1900xt oc to the xt-x and it runs the rallys fine at 1024x768 and med settings. But when it comes to the 8car/buggy races its really chuggy and not really playable, but I can still come first on rookie :D So would a 8800gtx card sort the chuggyness out in dirt, or is my cpu at fault?

May be able to help you a bit here.

I used to run a single core Venice @ 2.5ghz, with a 8800GTS. Now, in the demo on that buggy track the framerate was absolutely atrocious in places, dropping down to 18fps even if I set 640x480, every setting down as low as it will go.

I now have a C2D @ 3.2ghz and performance is a bit better. I can now use 1680x1050 medium settings with the worst I've seen so far around 23fps.

Still absolutely disgraceful performance, but it does seem to be a highly cpu limited game given the fact that changing resolution etc makes so little difference to framerate and the gain I got from upgrading my cpu. Don't think the game supports mutlicore(?) so I reckon you probably need at least a 5ghz C2D for genuinely smooth performance in this game.

So in other words, I don't think a 8800gtx would be an instant fix for your system. Maybe try what I did and set all the graphics settings to minimum just to see what it does for your fps. If that does help you, then maybe a GTX would too...

That FX55 is deffenitly a bottleneck, I was using an Athlon 3700+ @ 2.8ghz with an 8800GTS @ 650/2.2 and 1GB ram, dirt was awfull on the buggy track, 1440x900, ultra settings, 2x Multisampling, no AA/AF, around 18fps minimum, 30fps max, and in the demo with the like desert road track I got around 30fps and above.

No I run at 1440x1050, Ultra settings, 4x Supersampling, 16xAA/AF, usually around 30+ fps, can dip to 24 sometmes but not allot, always playable and in some getting over 40fps, this is with a C2D E6600 @ 3.2ghz, 2gb Ballistix ram and an 8800GTS @ 650/2.2.

I also tried Dirt at 2500x1050, no AA/AF as you deffenitly dont need it at that res, Ultra settings, 4x Multisampling, and my average frame rate was around 23, in the plants and stuff it was around 18, but just think with a GTX how playable it will be at that res :)

I wonder how crysis will run on my system,, That should be mainly gpu hungry with a bit of luck, so a 8800gtx should speed things up there?

Im trying to make my system last another year, cos I will be getting a lump of money then, and I will be able to afford a whole new ultimate system.

Ive just upgraded to 2gb of mem to push my system abit more.. Will I be wasting my money buying a 8800gtx, has my 30month old sys just about reached its speed limet, or is there still more speed in there somewhere, look in sig?

Advice guys?

Buy the cheapest 8800GTS 640MB you can find right now, then when penryn is out, upgrade to penryn and new mobo + ram and get a G90.

Im hopeing to get the best cpu and stuff when I upgrade my system, so its worth the wait, and try to push my fx55 to its full speed untill then. When I upgrade I will be using the fx55 as a 2nd pc, so I'll will prob keep it untill it dies.

What CPU you thinking of upgrading to? Penryn when they are released?

But if you want some extra frames and higher performance in some games then a GTS 640 will do nicely untill G90 and penryn :)

I dont really keep up with whats comming out, So I have no idea what a Penryn is, but Im guessing thats a cpu right? When I Upgrade I will just buy the best cpu and stuff thats out at the time. Then fingers crossed it should last me as long as this system, that I spent a little over £2000 for 30months ago, and Ive spent about £400 over the 30months on it.

So when exactly you planning on upgrading?

Yea Penryn is the new CPU's coming from Intel :), I think they are going to be released when the price drops hit.

To be honnest I think I will start saving up now, cos theres no way my pc will last another year if I buy a 8800 card untill I get this lump of money next year.

It will take about 5months or so to get the money together, I might go for the best intel extreme quad core (2.66), cos I hear there coming down loads in price, with 4gb of mem and the best gfx card thats out.

Any ideas how much the extreme quad core is comming down to, so I can get a rough idea how much I will need to save?

Far Cry was is fairly heavily CPU limited on my old AMD 3Ghz rig, so don't think Crysis will be any better.

An 8800GTX will let you up the resolution and detail settings without slowdown, but it will still run like a dog in CPU limited areas, which with a 2.6Ghz FX55 may be plenty.

Buying top of the range is extremely cost ineffective with CPUs. If you are willing to overclock you can have virtually the same performance as an overclocked top-of-the-range, for half or a third the price.

just for your infomation im running an old system :) which runs everything at the moment pretty fine without any clunky movements with all settings on high apart from AA & AS (is that it?) only on x4 as i cant notice the difference on the higher settings.
current rig consists of sandeigo core fx55 clocked to 3.6ghz 4gb of ram and a 320mb 8800gts graphics card
im having no problems with current games at the moment :) fingers crossed for the new ones

That's an impressive clock for an FX55, even a SD model. I would generally expect to have to use phase change to get to those speeds!

Unfortunately, speedy's FX55 is a 130nm model which is not stable at 2.8Ghz.

Its almost at 2.8 but not quite, its at 2.78
