Lo,

I just got a new monitor on Friday and it now seems that I need a new G card as my x1950xt 256 mb ram doesnt like 1680 x 1050 and I get abit of lag.

I have a Gigabyte DS3R mainboard - which doesnt do SLi/ATi crossfire.

Given that you cant buy a 8800GT for love nor money Im looking at a 3870 512 mb. Will one of these cards meet my criteria for cod4 or will I have to go buy a crossfire board :/ ?

I keep reading about a 8800GTS revision but know one knows of a release date yet, any more info on this card?

If I can help it I dont want to buy a new mainboard for crossfire..... Im also not in anyway interested in playing Crysis until this time next year/2009. So im not concerned about a super dooper G-card that aces Crysis or anything.

As long as I can run cod4/UT3/SoF: Payback on High @ 1680 x 1050 with 2/4x AA im happy.

What should I do :S?

i use 1680x1050 @ 4x AA on cod4 with a stock HD2900XT and iv never lagged once and iv not felt any slow downs or anything.

The HD3870 is quicker than the 2900 and a lot cheaper so the 3870 is what i would go for in my oppinion especially for the price its worth it.

8800GT is perfect for you since it's faster than the HD 3870 in Call Of Duty 4 and Unreal Tournament 3. :)

I wouldn't worry about availability since OcUK is getting loads in very soon according to Gibbo.

Ah I see.

I take it your x2900Xt is 512mb?

I think thats the problem with my x1950 - it being 256 mb. Shame cause it has been a cracking card.

Guess I'll have to get the 8800GT and wait for them to come in stock. At least I wont have to get a new motherboard!

Should I not consider the 8800GTS revision?.

I'm probably gonna hold of buying anything until 15th Dec (pay day). I hope by then the 8800Gt will be £140-£150, or am I wishful thinking?

I run COD4 at that res with x4 AA on a 512mb x1900XT and fraps was mostly showing 70fps + in singleplayer. So i think your restriction is the 256mb memory ( so buy a 2nd hand 512mb one or get a 3870/8800). I do get the very occasional jerk - but I'd tend to blame Vista for that ;). Bizzarely everytime i start multiplayer it tells me my system has changed and tries to tell me 800*600 is optimal! Obviously this looks hideous on a 2407WFP. COD4 certainly stresses the old gpu tho', fan gets going @ galeforce very quickly but my old Xaser III case is not exactly cool anyway.
