My mate wants to buy his first ever pc, I kinda told him the spec to go for including a 6800-7800gt,gtx as im trying to get him into bf2 when he eventually gets his pc. Anyway he popped into the pc shop in town and was told he could get a complete system with monitor for £1150, said the guy would put in a Gainward 6800gs and told him this would be faster than a 7800gtx??, He said he showed him a setup in a pc mag which proved it. I said no way,surely a 7800gtx whips a 6800gs.. but tonight he says he found the page in the pc mag, its on page 108 of PC Format, and sure enough the system listed with the 6800gs boasts its faster than any 7800gtx?? Is this an oversight or do gainward clock the nuts off their 6800's??

i was under the impression that the fastest 6800GS on production from Gainward was the "Goes Like Hell" 512MB version which can barely keep up with a 7800GT. so i thought that it must be an oversight

Looking at the page again now, it doesnt state sli at all?? just 6800gs faster than any 7800gtx??
Looks like the bloke in the shops using that ad to his advantage though, hes probably shifting loadsa 6800gs at high prices, lol

Forget PC Format, I want the guys mugshot so I can throw eggs. Damn false advertising. I hate PC shops, they rip people off so much. And the people that work there know nothing. I don't like watching people being voluntarily mugged.

Maybe it's just london then, but they really don't know anything. Having said that, I was making a generalisation on large chain stores, not little ones. I was looking for a laptop last year and was unflinchingly told the biggest load of bull I have ever heard in my life. I just had a look on the retailer of that systems site and it uses 1 x Gainward GeForce BLISS 6800GS PCX 512MB GS GLH TV-DVI 1.4ns. One card, not SLI. I can't even find it on Gainwards website let alone find any reviews on it at all. I can't see it beating a 7800GT though in any way, shape or form.
Incidentally, it should be the retailer who is selling this rig, not PC Format that would be sued for false advertising. PC Format just prints what it is paid to print.
