Game of Thrones - Read from book 3 or start fresh?

Off topic and very controversial but I've always thought that LoTR is about the only example where the films (the extended editions) are actually better than the books.

The LoTR movies did the books justice I agree in a way that few adaptations do but I still prefer the print version.

As for the Game of Thrones, the books are far better than the TV series which is very streamlined, particularly in series two. That's not to say they are Shakespeare. Some of his writing is rather clunky, but for pure drama and scale the books are hard to beat.

What is the ETA on the final book/books in the series? I have a thing about not starting a book series until all books have been written. But I also want to read the books before watching the series, have skyboxed them all so far but not watched any of them.

Common with most books you can also 'hear' the characters thinking which puts a different spin on some conversations that are had and gives better insight into what makes the people tick.

I think the character thought monologues are vital for GoT to make much sense, especially for people like Tyrion.

It gives much better depth to all of the characters and their motivations that you sorely miss out on in a television/film adaptation

oops, probably should have edited that into my last post

Current rate of progress would suggest four to five years for each of the two books yet to come, but you can knock off a year for time since the last came out. But Martin is not certain he can finish in two books, so it may stretch to three. Given Martin's age, you can see why fans are panicking.

What what what. Where has it been implied that it will be three?

I think people are unduly panicking though. He will finish the series. I'd put money on it. Unless some crazed fan shoots him.

I thought he had about a third of Winds of Winter written?

Probably not quite a third, more like a quarter.

So upto 15 years? **** George RR Martin dieing before then, *I* might die before then. Not really.

A few years ago, when fans forced him to write books four and five, and while Crows was still being written. He's been very quiet about it since then, and he says he has an outline for books six and seven. But only an outline. Trouble is, every book from three onwards has always ended up far larger than planned once he started writing. Remember that there was only supposed to have been one book to cover the five year gap on chronology originally planned, and in the event we ended up with two, one of which had to be split in two for paperback. I'd say the odds that it really are only two left are pretty slim.
