Do you remeber the days when gamers were gamers before consoles became somthing everyone must have. Now everyones gaming and not just us old elite few who were gaming before Sony made it cool? Games were so much better when aimed at gamers and not when aimed at everyone. The problem is now everyone is into gaming games seem to be same old same old I've seen it all before.

I't appears true games taste of games are slowly dying out to make for what average Joe wants and what average Joe wants sucks.

Feeling a bit eliteist ;)

If you want 'games for gamers' then check out opensource stuff, Gamecube (and Wii), etc. Its out there, you just have to find it.

Of course if you want amazing graphics, then you're stuck with the 'generic' stuff since it costs a lot of money to make amazing graphics.

As boogle said, creating next gen games is very expensive stuff, so much so that games are definitely being designed for the widest possible market over other considerations.

I'm REALLY hoping that M$ do the right thing and make Live available for indy developers to get out there and tote their wares. If M$ can make it accessible and cheap for small outfits to deploy and reap the rewards of a huge audience we may see the kind of revival indy development has gotten on the PC with many many small opensource projects developing games for targetted audiences.

Well in a way all the games released now are aimed at 'gamers'. Nintendo keep saying that is the big problem with games they are made for people that A, want to play games and B, Know how to play games.

You wouldnt say the Wii is same old but the concept of that is to get everyone into gaming...

I've being considering very much on buying a Wii. I didn't get a GameCube and sometimes wish I did as I loved the Nintendo 64.

I don't mean elite as in Oh man I'm the best ever just in the sense of being a true gamer.

I think someones got rose tinted specs on ;)

I started gaming seriously with the GB, and whilst there is some truth to the idea that games aimed at gamers tend to be better than those aimed at the mass market (look at movie tie ins for the truth in that;)), but that has always been the case.
The problem now, is that it tends to cost so much to develop a game that they tend to take the safe approach, which if had been the case 10-15 years ago would mean we don't have half the things we take for granted in games today :(

I suppose this is why I still look towards Nintendo a lot of the time - they can, and do take chances to impove how games work, and generally concentrate on the gameplay rather than the look:)
