Games for Windows Live - Does anybody use this rubbish!?

but not games that just have gfwl tacked on that you buy at retail?

You're not the only one who's confused here!

This confusion stems from the fact that there is GFW-Live and GFW-Marketplace, and MS seems to use the names interchangeably, but they aren't the same thing... at least I don't think they are!

For instance, when trying to download the GFW client here, the page tells you that you're downloading the GFW-Marketplace client, whilst the file you download is gfwlivesetup.exe.

That file is the same thing its the combined marketplace & GFWL software all in one. They should make it clearer as many think you need the Marketplace client running or open all the time but once you have downloaded & installed the game you can close it down as its only function is to buy games & manage your account.

The Marketplace is a part of Live system. They're not separate things.

The in game client containing authentication and online features is another part of the Live system as an example. They're all part of Live, but don't have to run together.

Another thing GFWL should make clearer is that several games now support 5x5 what this means is that 5 different gamertags can play the game on the PC it was installed on which is rather generous compared to other services only allowing 1 account per game! This is all down to the publisher choice though :( & only applies on games released after 15/11/2010

So that's a no on you can't download retail games that have gfwl on them though gfwl?

Nope.

I don't understand how GFWL can be so bad considering the tools Microsoft have available.

My biggest complaints about the service are:

Unable to interact with friends outside of the whether that be communications or just seeing who's online/playing. Even the ability to add a friend outside of a game would be nice. This could easily be resolved with a modified version of MSN Messenger.

My games do not update automatically, instead I have to wait for the update whenever I want to play the game, often having to apply several updates in sequence (I'm looking at you Fallout 3). These updates should be applied through the Windows Updater much like how Office Updates can be applied.

This has probably been fixed since but every time in the past I've tried to use the service I have always been redirected to the xBox Live page. I do not own a console and I do not appreciate being treated like a consoler.

GFWL is horrible, its up there with securom and starforce, unnecessary crap that gets in the way. I think microsoft actually hates PC gaming... i really do, if i remember right they even charged people to use GFWL initially? Or they tried to anyways, dont know if anyone actually signed up for it lol.

Bought Metro 2033 for a £5 and got it today, opened the box and it had the GFWL rubbish at the top but when i went to install it it brought up steam and did it through that instead. Just tested the game and theres no trace of GFWL anywhere....very odd.

Because it's not a GfWL title

Yeah i noticed. and yet it says so. look.

strange. Played it for last 10 mins and everything seems xboxy, press X / B ect i have to keep pressing buttons on the pad even though im using mouse and keyboard. Damned console ports.

So...there's :

Games for Windows
Games for Windows Live
Games for Windows Live Marketplace

Two of which are kind of the same thing, but different, and the other is just a title. Excellent :D
