Games that aren't as good as you remember

I did recently start playing a port of Lords of Midnight on my phone, and it's still brilliant. I think the original was released in the early 80's :)

i tried to play project igi last month, graphics were poor as and the gameplay wasnt that bad but couldnt get past 2nd level as it constantly crashed

San Andreas. I bought it in a steam sale a couple years back and was looking forwards to molding out some low riders. Man that game has not aged well. It was like playing minecraft

I've bought a fair few older titles on GOG.com these recent years in sales and I think I have to be honest and say most have disappointed.

Playing older games on new technology totally distorts the experience from how I remember. Fights against Boss NPCs that used to be massive and fearsome are now tiny figures in the middle high resolution screen. Likewise the maps in RTS that took forever to load and pan around are now barely bigger then your desktop resolution.

I played C&C Red Alert 2 using the On The House promotion via Origin the other week. Thats a typical example. Not the strongest C&C game in the series but I still really enjoyed it at the time. Playing it again now and I found the experience trivial and underwhelming.

Everything

generally this, I struggle to enjoy games I've played before, I guess my memory is too good. It's not really as fun when you know what's going to happen.

I wish I could wipe my memory and enjoy things like Final Fantasy or Mass Effect all over again :(

Yea i wasn't slamming it at all, ive been playing it a lot the last week or two after steam re introduced me to it :D! We should MP sometime :D

The only thing i have issues with on it are the unit cap and the map size :D and both i remembered as being way higher/larger

Unit cap i think is just an INI file change from memory, not so sure on multiplayer though.
Map size was customizable, the map : Krogoth encounter (over 5 hours to finish that map in the day) was rather large and the editor buggy as it was did allow for some impressively large maps so long as you had 24mb of ram.. ow back in the day when i had an uber pc with a 133mz processor :D

"Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory" and "Warrock"

I spent so many hours playing these game, absolutely loved them and its what started me off as a MMO/FPS pc gamer but theyre not the same now..warrock got taken over by another company and made compleatly P2W with transactions.

Runescape lol. Had great times as a kid, but a lot of that was down to being the only online game i could play with dialup.

I did about a year ago play a bunch of old PS1 games with a mate which was great. One thing that blew us away was how hard they get! We got stuck on like the 3rd level of abes odyssey lol. Thats one aspect i do miss, the challenge but many of them have controls and visuals so outdated they're just not quite enjoyable anymore. The lack of immersion kills it and we don't realize just how far this industry has advanced.

Totally unrelated to the thread, but by god, I loved that album. Must go and listen to it on spotify to bring back memories of the 90s

I go back to it on a regular basis. One of the *very* few electronic albums that sounds as fresh today as it did back then.

Comeback album was a bit 'meh' though.

I have already done the INI file change however i still don't like that it needs to be changed like that because as you said i have no idea how it impacts multiplayer.

And Krogoth encounter is a 24x24 and is particularly small in comparison to several other maps :/ That are all still very small compared to how i remember them wish they were a lot bigger.

World of Warcraft... Jesus its crap.. And I spent far to much on it :(

Another Vote for World of Warcraft - I am still currently playing it, but it's worlds apart now from the good times I had at the end of Vanilla, and during The Burning Crusade. Most of that is that the social side has moved on, seems a lot harder to meet people and become involved in it, in the way you used to (instant group finders, more solo content etc).

I was a little later to the party in WoW, started in WotLK, but I quit at the end of the Cata. Game just went into decline. A few friends have asked if I'll start playing again but it's just not what it used to be.
