This thread will probably die in a hurry, but i thought i'd give it a go anyway.

The two games that stand out for me, are:

Half Life 1:

The beasties in this game actually made me scared to play it at night with the lights off. And some of the puzzles frustrated me to no end, especially the reactor core (i think thats what it was) level where you had to make your way up on the platforms that rotated around the core, and then walk into the thingies that warped you to a different part of the level. It took me ages to get the combination right to make it to the top of that damn thing.

All up, it took around 7 weeks for me to complete the game.

Septerra Core:

By far the best game of that genre... well, maybe not, but it's the only one i bothered to play all the way thru. It had an awesome storyline and plot, but as with HL:1, had huge moments of frustration. This was made worse by the fact that there was a bug in the game that halted your progress at a certain point depending on the order you completed things in the game. This was the time before i had the net, and knew of these "patches" to fix stuff.

Anyway, besides the bugs and the constantly retracing your own steps a dozen times to find an item hidden in the stupidest of places, i couldnt drag myself away from it. After installing the patch to fix the bug of the missing herb that prevented me from continueing for the better part of a week, every waking moment was spent playing this game trying to finish it. By the time i was finally done, i swore i'd never play it again... which i didnt, but would have if i could find the disk. :o

All up this game took me 3 months to complete.

What are the games that annoyed you to no end, but kept you compelled all the way to the finish?

hhmmm while not a PC game, the original command and conquer on the saturn had me pulling my hair out untill I completed it. Loved it, hated it, but could'nt stop playing it.

As for PC games the one that springs to mind is System Shock 2, I just refused to let that beat me......although I think it actualy did in the end :(

definately Half-Life1 , man that game was unbelievable at the time.
it had that 'one more go.... ok just one more .... right thats it last attempt... hmm wonder whats next , ok last go ...' repeat*

for me, Deus Ex was a better game overall due to its replayability and diff paths to the end.

World of Warcraft....

/*looks around carefully*...... Please god help me!! i cant escape.... they wont let me leave!! FOR GODS SAKE HELP ME!!

Any of those point-and-click adventures. :p

There's inevitably one puzzle that eludes you and drives you insane, but you must finish it. :D

alex kid in miracle world on the master system

i still never completed that... i would get to a pink room towards the end with boxes on the wall or something and that was it... there was no area of the "miracle world" left to explore... just an empty room and an incomplete game.

I blame that for my psychological problems

I remeber getting addicted to a lot of games.

Toe Jam and Earl
Resident Evil.
Tomb Raider2
Metal Gear Solid

On my PC is tend to get addicted to MMOS, the problem is you cannot complete them. :p

Ive never accutly compeleted half life 2. i was on the last misson and just couldnt be arsed to finish it and still cant be arsed today.

Plus on most games im not too bothered if i don't compelete the sp i usually play mp anyway, so im not too fussed.

Warhammer: Dark Omen.

The last level fighting the dread king, its just so impossible. Even reinstalled it the other day and im back there again still trying to complete it.

On the xbox, gotta be halo 2 on legendary  Dam did that take me a long frustrating time :(

As mentioned above, Metal Gear Solid, loved this game, it was the dogs.

Also Half Life 2, and then Medal of Honor Allied Assault, great game for its time.

Tomb raider 1
Resident Evil 1
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil Code Veronica (best game ever)
Broken Sword 1
Broken Sword 2 ( stuck on a part of this for months)

These games i got addicted to in a big way, really good games that i just couldn't stop playing. Ive not played a game since that Ive enjoyed as much so that i couldn't stop playing. Games these days i tend to play for a bit then stop playing for ages.

what about the first warhammer game "Shadow of the Horned Rat"?

X-COM apocalypse anyone?

And did anyone ever complete "Shadow of the Beast II"? Without the cheat?

Shadow of the horned rat for the WIN!

I must have played that game a bazillion times when I was a kid. I remember completing after AGES and they playing it through again but this time trying not to lose an entire unit. It just didn't feel right until you had completed the game with all the units surviving at the end :D. (Same for Dark Omen which I don't think I ever completed because of trying to do this! [one of the end battles was totally solid]).

Loved those games. They didn't drive me nuts though.

Soul Calibur on the dreamcast would drive me insane though when I was a kid, there would be some fights on the mission mode that I'd just try for ages to beat and couldn't drop it till I had managed it :)

Hmm... lots of games i've never even heard of showing up in here.

I take it nobody has heard of Septerra Core either?

System Shock 2. I was only wee ad didn' know about patches, iirc there was a section that was actualy impossible in the stock game and only doable with a late patch. Spent many-a-week wandering around the level getting increasingly low on ammo/psyonic stuff muttering.

im trying to complete it atm, stuck on the last mission

Those missions are a pain, all I can remember about my tactics were that I would just use the wood elf archers (if you went to get them) and as much arty as possibly to thin out their numbers before they hit you. Dont think it worked though.

Not sure I'm even thinking of the right mission, is the last mission the one with the REALLY long map or is the second to last?

last one is the super long map, with the pyramids etc, loads of enemies.

i have actually just completed it lol. had about 35 troops left

i just bombarded them loads. Eventually kill something makes the dread king come, i just bombarded him with arty, a few archers, bright magic and banner of wrath. He eventually died then i just finished ther est off.
