This thread will probably die in a hurry, but i thought i'd give it a go anyway.
The two games that stand out for me, are:
Half Life 1:
The beasties in this game actually made me scared to play it at night with the lights off. And some of the puzzles frustrated me to no end, especially the reactor core (i think thats what it was) level where you had to make your way up on the platforms that rotated around the core, and then walk into the thingies that warped you to a different part of the level. It took me ages to get the combination right to make it to the top of that damn thing.
All up, it took around 7 weeks for me to complete the game.
Septerra Core:
By far the best game of that genre... well, maybe not, but it's the only one i bothered to play all the way thru. It had an awesome storyline and plot, but as with HL:1, had huge moments of frustration. This was made worse by the fact that there was a bug in the game that halted your progress at a certain point depending on the order you completed things in the game. This was the time before i had the net, and knew of these "patches" to fix stuff.
Anyway, besides the bugs and the constantly retracing your own steps a dozen times to find an item hidden in the stupidest of places, i couldnt drag myself away from it. After installing the patch to fix the bug of the missing herb that prevented me from continueing for the better part of a week, every waking moment was spent playing this game trying to finish it. By the time i was finally done, i swore i'd never play it again... which i didnt, but would have if i could find the disk.
All up this game took me 3 months to complete.
What are the games that annoyed you to no end, but kept you compelled all the way to the finish?
