Games to be "(re)playable movies" by 2012?

I don't think that is overly optimistic. (I agree that it's optimistic though.)

2006 releases = Oblivion, Prey, Battlefield 2142

2009 releases = Mirror's Edge, Street Fighter IV, Riddick:Dark Athena

I'd say the graphics are pretty impressive between those years, and don't forget the changes that have been made to Half Life 2 since it was first released, and that's just updating an existing engine.

We also now have mainstream triple monitor support and that is going to push monitor design and graphics cards to new levels, since pushing 2MP is relatively easy to do in everything now (barring Crysis).

Speaking of which, look at how impressive Crysis graphics are right now...

A lot of what makes a movie movie-like is the dramatic camera work, which would simply ruin a game. It might 'look' like a movie, but it certainly won't feel like one when you're playing the game.

They were saying 'Toy Story' graphics when the PS2 was about to come out.

I can remember back in the day when SGI Onyx machines were being used to test Nintendo 64 coding [same architecture, MIPS or whatever it was] some fanboy magazines were showing images that Onyx boxes had pumped out claiming that the N64 would have that sort of graphics.

They were pre-rendered still images. Someone forgot to tell them what pre-rendered meant, obviously :D
