I've no idea if other people find this happens to them, so i'll post about it :p

Do you ever browse a games forum, here for example, and then go to the screenshot thread and see a game where someone describes in detail what's happening in the screenshot. It makes the game look fantastic to play. You have never played the game or own the game, yet you want to go out straight away and buy it.

I have done this before with Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. I watched gigs and gigs of videos and viewed hundreds of screenshots, and read many reviews where they would describe in great detail how they were creating and developing their character in this world of vampires. So i decided to buy the game, and the first few minutes of the game were fantastic, but then i stopped playing after about 4 days of it, and since then i havn't touched it. I have no idea, the game just doesn't seem so cool when i play it, but if someone was to show me a bunch of screenshots of their characters now, and give a quick description of the game again, it would make me want to play again, weird.

What prompted me to make this thread was a picture i saw of X3 where someone was describing how they had just bought a new ship and how much greater it was than anything they had before. But i know for a fact if i went out and bought this game, i'd get bored of it very quickly and not play it ever again.

A few games i would have this type of problem with are:

Oblivion
X3 Reunion
Vanpire Bloodlines
EVE Online

Does anyone else have this problem?

:p Weird i know.

Rome: Total War springs to mind for me. A great game on the surface but it doesn't suck me in.

Yeah that's another for me too, looks like an amazing game, i tried the demo but just didn't get into it.

for me was star wars Kotor. everyone on here hypes it up etc, after readin them threads and seein screenshots it seemed like an awesome game, but i just couldnt get into it at all. found it quite boring actually :(, though the storyline seemed to be good

Hhhm. There's a bit of a theme in the games you cite. Maybe you're just not into the games that require a bit more patience.

I have to confess that I can't get on with 'thinkers' myself. I like immediacy in my games.

Ginga

GTA San Andreas (and previous GTA games too). The premise is fantastic, the story, the idea of having all that freedom...but when it comes down to playing it i just don't click with it. Really dull and frustrating game...only good thing is the music.

X3 needs loads of patience. And i do mean hours an hours of it. Hell. Even i got bored of it after a couple of hours of illegal space fuel trading when my ship got blown up. lol. I decided to go ship hunting and found myself a nice toucan though.

WoW, and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones for me, couldn't get into them at all.

Please don't say "how long did you play WoW for, you havn't played enough to get into it" it was the lack of a storyline and the gameplay I didn't like.

As for Prince of Persia, I dunno just kinda got bored after getting half way through.

I was the same with San Andreas. I had a lot of fun bombing around on the BMX and exploring, but once I tried to buckle down and get into the game I got bored. Then one day I played it I realised I'd been hitting buttons over and over in the gym for about twenty minutes, and I just thought 'what the heck am I doing?'. Haven't touched it since.

I've got a bit bored of COD2 also, it just doesn't have the same atmosphere as the first one, despite being technically superior in every way.

Oblivion.
On paper it looks like the kind of game I should absolutely adore. But I just don't find it appealing once I play it :/
Maybe when I have more spare time I'll try to devote more time to it and see if i enjoy it eventually.

It's horridly boring for the first planet, though if you found it boring after becoming a Jedi, I guess it's just not a game for you.

Personally, I really can't see why the GTA games are so good, poor graphics and horrid controls to me, really can't get into them.

The Civilization series, i havent got a clue how to play it, then i see other people rave on about it, and frustrates me as i really wanna grasp it

I'm the same with gta:sa, I cant play through it at all as i find the missions too similar. I spose that's what you get for knowing what elements make up a game, things get a bit too familiar.

But, saying that I'm enjoying the online mods of gta:sa a whole load. The edge that multiplayer gives to the game really sets it alight for me. :)

Luckily, im a regular on a server that has aload of other regular's on it, so cheaters are quite rare and it makes the game much more entertaining to play :)

Only game of recent time to do this to me would be Oblivion

Not really an RPG person but after watching a 20 min gameplay video and loving what I was seeing I grabbed it at work and had a go.

The first section of the game was great fun (if a little overwhelming). I then got into exploring the big city I found myself at. Then it BSOD'd my PC. I never went back to it after that :(

I really should as the story sounds like it could be good :) Need a new chair though as this one is uncomfy after like 5 mins :(

hahaha this thread made me laugh since, i do get that so often as well. looking at the screenshot thread , brain going "wow that looks cool, lets play that"

but i know i'll probably get bored in a short while.

grass is greener on the other side and all that malarky.

there were loads of FPS and RTSs that never did it for me like Far Cry (I still havent got a clue why people think its great), Serious Sam, earth 2150 series, jagged alliance series

i find lack of time and the move towards complete freedom in gameplay (nice in some ways but i like a good strong storyline) something which detracts from my gaming.

hmm oblivion may be the next one, after i buy it.

I have had the opposite.

WoW, hated the look of it, sounded really boring as all you did was level up. Mates get the game from OcUK, some more in real life grab it and I am hooked, can't play on my own as its one of the dullest games I have yet to play, but stick me in a group healing and I love it.

People make that game, get good people and its one of the best games I have played, just a laugh first and foremost attacking horde in underwear. :o

Have had a couple of games that I thought would be amazing, Cossacks II is the main one, someone raved about it, after playing Cossacks I for a year solid I bought the game, and it was a load of rubbish, completely changed and the only game I have ever played to max out 2GB ram with 2D graphics, that slowed on a 7800GT. Not picked it up since.

Half life, Half life 2 and for similar reasons, doom 3.

I'm not a fan of horror movies and i just do not understand why to be ground breaking, they have to have 'zombie attacks from behind while lighting is mysteriously dark, shock' and 'hordes of small creatures which are hard to hit jump at you, eek'.

Action films are way way better than horror movies so why do these game developers seem to have an obsession with trying to scare the player?

I'm another for KOTOR I and II. The game seemed really boring, I like my RPGs to spill the beans seemlessly, it seemed more like Super Mario 64 where you do a whole lotta killing monsters to get anywhere.

I'd love to get in X3 the Reunion but from hearing i'd have to spend hours and hours doing trade routes, it seemed quite boring.

Backwards

Dawn of War: I always thought Warhammer was for nerds (well, it is lets face it) but the game is absolutely fantastic.

World of Warcraft: Everyone constantly bashes the game (on the forums, nearly every post is negative) but when you have a friend to play with over teamspeak, it's awesome. As someone said, the players make the game, find some nice players to play with and you'll have a huge amount of enjoyment.
