Gaming Surfaces (Mouse Mats to us commoners)...

I don't wanna hijack gimpy's thread, but could someone sort of breakdown the main differences between the hard and more traditional soft pads. Is it just a taste thing? I've never really tried hard, and i could do with getting a new mat soon.

I cannot see there being a difference in performance between a hard and soft mat. Purely a matter of what you prefer the feel of.
Love my XL Boogiebug, it works just aswell as my Razer Goliath, only I could cut it up and make eight of them. :D

I used to use hard plastic mouse pads for a good few years (fUnc, 4D, S&S) and then I tried the Steelseries Qck cloth pad and it's now my favourite. It has enough friction to allow for precise movement like the plastic pads (but not rough or hard obviously), while also having the speed that plastic pads lack with the cloth/fabric material. It's the perfect combination for me.

Mine is a bit worn now and have been thinking of maybe getting another but curious about giving a different brand a try. Are there any other brands similar to the Qck in regards to what I mentioned above? I don't want to get any bog standard cloth pad - it's gotta be similar to the Qck and doesn't need to be massive, as I'm a mid-to-high sensitivity gamer. :o:cool:

I need to get myself a decent gaming mouse mat. Im currently using the desk surface that seems to send the mouse into a wild frenzy. I think it must be the grain texture on the desk, it must look funny to other players in multiplayer, starring at the sky spinning in a mad circle whilst L4D zombies eat me alive or a CoD sniper shoots my head off. Its so frustrating, you lose orientation at the worst possible moment cos of this desk.

Looks like I'm one of the few who like hard mats :)

I'm using the Cyber Snipa Tracer and love it (only problem is I can't seem to find a mouse that doesn't scrape on it, they always make the glide pads too shallow). It's got a blue lit acrylic surround too which looks awesome

Im a mouse mat noobie so go easy, do you mean the plastic bottom of your mouse glides against the plastic mouse mat? Dosent that make it really noisey?

I cant decide between hard mouse mat surface or cloth? Do the cloth ones have more friction than the hard surface ones?

Yeah it makes a little noise with my deathadder, not as much as my last mouse though. Might just get another set of teflon feet and double em up to raise the mouse a bit, the bottom's already scratched up and I've only had it for a week :(

But yeah cloth mats tend to have more resistance than hard ones, which can provide more or less control depending on your preference

I'm in need of a new mat as well. I've got a G7 and up until a few weeks ago I was using and old cloth pad that my dad got while he was working at Silicon Graphics in the mid-nineties. :P It's now falling to pieces and is stained with all sorts of liquids, so... yes.

Ideas? I do prefer soft mats, and not huge - maybe a bit bigger than your average office pad.
