Hi All,

I have around £230 - £300 to spend on a new monitor after smashing my LG ultrawide.

Main use is gaming, infact the only use is gaming really.

Although I liked the ultrawide I'm obviously not that blown away as I am torn with what to buy.

I am stuck to buying on Amazon but unsure what I should go with.

Does 144hz make a difference?

Is 24" big enough or would I always wish I had gone bigger? Connected my 32" TV and know that is too big.

24" opens up more options within budget but there is the odd monitor available with 1ms, 144hz @ 27" mainly offerings from AOC.

Currently rocking a 980gtx and play battlefield 1 mainly.

Or should I just go back to the ultrawide? I can't get the curved within budget like I had before however.

Not sure if I should hold off all together and wait to see what offering are available around black Friday.. After all this is how I got the curved 29" ultrawide @ £230.

Any help greatly appreciated!

I do love ultrawide and would definitely not go back to 16:9 for gaming.

But 29 inch is too small as the vertical space just isn't enough.

I'd go for a 27 inch 16:9 unless you can afford a 34 inch ultrawide.

How'd you manage to smash your monitor??

Nobody can tell you what size you should have but saying that, 24 inches is my preferred size for semi serious online multiplayer.

The best monitors that I have used under £300 are the Samsung 24CFG70 and the Viewsonic XG2401. The Viewsonic is a tn but has the advantage in motion clarity at high fps. The Samsung has really strong colors, is a va but may smear in some situations. It has been updated to the C24FG73 so maybe that isn't the case anymore.

Samsung also has a 25 inch called the S25HG50. I haven't had any experience using it though.

A 144Hz monitor is recommended for online shooters such as BF1 for sure.

I'm just thinking the reason the OP wasn't particularly bowled over by ultrawide was the lack of vertical real estate.

Isn't a 29 inch ultrawide similar height to a 21 inch 16:9?
It was more like 23.6 or close to that. I was eye balling it though against the Samsung.

I did manage to get on with a 29 inch ultrawide but the lack of a higher refresh rate made me give it up. The 34 inch ultrawide was much better and even had 144hz but still didn't allow me to perform as well as the smaller screens.

Thanks guys.

I was moving into the new room I had converted in the garage, as I was coming down the stairs I tripped and it was either me with a broken back or the screen had to just go! Not the best scenario to be in!

Moving from a 20 screen to ultrawide was nice but I'm just wondering if I maybe go for a 27" it will give me a bit more screen estate.

I may just wait a little while and see where the price of the 34" ultrawide goes. Wanting to upgrade the pc for Xmas if the wife approves so may go all out then.

Plan is to keep the 980gtx so ideally will be keeping with 1080.

Ahh nightmare scenario :( You made the right choice though, not worth seriously injuring yourself over a monitor.

I think if I was choosing between 27 inch 16:9 or 29 inch 21:9 I'd go for the 27.

Or wait to see what prices do on 34 inch. Although see the other thread on the bargain buy 34 inch....

Seems it's not as bad as I'd have expected.

Agree 100%. I found 24" 16:9 too small vertically (that is the same height as 29" UW) so yeah 27" 16:9 and it'll have to be 1440p for that size. Or if 34" 1440p also.
29" is fine width wise of course, just the height

Just placed an order for a 27" AOC. 75hz monitor.

Have been deciding if 144hz would be beneficial but at a cost of around £70 - £80 i'm not convinced.

Due here on Wednesday so will see if it is to my taste and although I may be upgrading to a 1070 later down the line I feel 1080P will do me fine.

27" 1080p may be a bit low PPI. IMO 1080p is best on 24" keeping around 90ppi.

I will see how I get on with it...I didn't really see much wrong when my 32" tv was hooked up for testing size wise so may not affect me.

Worst case will test it and if its not for me I will send it back.

Just got the monitor hooked up..after viewing on a 20/21" screen for a couple of months its going to take a little time to adjust to the 27"!

1080 resolution to me looks great on the screen. Very happy @ £169.99...
