Garage labour rates?

Coming up to service time on my A3, it also needs a new thermostat (not getting upto temp even on a run) and also wanted a new diverter valve and cam follower (both weak parts).

Now a nearby specialist wants £670 to do the lot at £90 labour rates, which is a decent wodge of cash. Is that rate reasonable for a specialist? I'll try a couple of local places and see if I can get it cheaper at a non-specialist but my worry is they won't be familiar with the work.

nothing there that any half decent mechanic would struggle with,

shop around as that labour rate sems a bit steep.

my local Audi Indy charges £45/hour for comparison

My local honda guy is 45/hr too, i'd expect to pay a bit less for just any garage

You could easily do a thermostat yourself too if you fancied having a go

Well shopping around paid off! Took it to the guys at Midlanda VW who did all the above plus new rear pads and a new CV boot for £600. Great service and great prices compared to everywhere else. Thanks all!

Yea, Devon isn't exactly world of the high earners and I could never get as low as £35 an hour.

there was a thread on decorators in GD recently and the artes some folks pay were daft, around here £80 a day is a doddle and £60 possible for a good one

only exception is my company charge me out at £262.50 ph :p

Garage i use locally (nr. okehampton) for doing small non specialist work is around that, just got the car back from an anti-roll bar link and was £30 all in, the VAG specalist in exeter is around £45/hour but an ex seat master technician and know he does a good job
