I'm looking for an fairly basic, compact sat nav. The features I require are:

Safety camera alerts (based on current speed)
Full postcode search
Up-to-date UK maps

Please spec me the best. TomTom or Garmin?

Thanks in advance!

TomTom. Purely down to the interface and guidance. The guidance is superb and it tells you what lane to be in. The little things like 'go right at the roundabout and take the x exit' (notice the go right bit) make it so much easier. The display is good. The map share stuff is great so you always have up to date maps.

Thanks for the info.

I was looking at a TomTom ONE IQ Routes the other day - it didn't have my address on there (house is about 7 years old). The property is listed on my friend's 2 year old Garmin though!

If you do a lot of motorway driving and have the money, TomTom. If you want something cheap, easy to use and perfectly efficient, Garmin.

I personally use my Garmin, and it gets me round town and does the motorways fine as long as they aren't too complex :)

I've just recently got an F&H 4.3" WS SatNav from a competitor. The software bundled with it is cumbersome and not worth it, but you can quite easily install TomTom and many other mobile satnav softwares for the at least half the price of the real thing and it works surprisingly well :)

There is also a 3½" version of the F&H SatNav which is even better value. I can't say that I have had a big problem with the TurboDog v6 software and so have never bothered loading the TomTom software - nonetheless, £40 well spent in my opinion :)

The TomTom (IQ model) was in a shop I visited last week. I'd like to think it was running more up-to-date software than a 2 year old (discontinued) Garmin :)

You'd be surprised. If it's just a display model then would the shop go to all the trouble of registering and updating it? Best to ask probably...

The thing is, with tom tom, the maps are updated nigh on every second of the day using map share (you can choose from confirmed, unconfirmed, etc. when you choose what you want to get).

If it's anything, other than updated that day, then I wouldn't say it didn't have an address on there. I've had more accurate journeys with Tom Tom than with a Garmin.

Why would a 2 year old Garmin with no updates applied have more up-to-date maps than a TomTom model released within the last 6 months?

because garmin uses navteq maps.

Having used both i prefer the garmin, currently using a 765T and performs really well. Also on aside not use co-pilot on the iphone and for like £25 its pretty good

For under £40 I just got the 3.5 F&H don't really need a sat nav , but at that price, and every so often it /would/ be handy. Can igo8 be loaded on to this device? I know tom tom can.

Regular garmin user here. Use it on a daily basis and never had any issues with out of date maps or signal loss. Couple of the other drivers at work use various TomTom units and im not a massive fan of the layout or the map display. I do a lot of navigating by browsing the map, so simple with my garmin but overly complex (seemingly) with a TomTom. Im fairly confident that what ever make you buy it will quite happily get you to where you need to go so try get your hands on one of each and have a play see which one you prefer.
