Gary Neville appointed as part of England coaching staff

I take it that you didn't watch last summers under-21's Euros?

We did alright the time before though, albeit being totally second best in the final :p Yes we totally underperformed last time round and that's not up for debate.

I'm a tad biased as the man is like a god to me (That is why I don't want him anywhere near the england job to be honest, hate to see him fail and perhaps tarnish that image in my head of him as a player) the profile and interest in the u21 squad has increased greatly under his guidance.

Anyway, I think Neville is a cracking appointment, couldn't care less what badges he has (many greats have never had anything significant), I think he is someone the players will look up to and respect and though it is not directly comparable, the insight and intelligence he shows on Sky might be a breath of fresh air on the training pitch, I don't know.

Collymore is such an waste of oxygen, so bitter that that in one year Neville's done more as a pundit than he's done in god knows how many. Fact of the matter is he's not even good at it and no one even values his opinion hence why he's restricted to Channel 5 and talkSport rather than Sky, ESPN, ITV or the Beeb :o

Collymore. What. A. Joke.

I honestly can't understand why people listen to Talk****, but then I don't understand the lure of reading tabloid newspapers.

They were talking about it last night on Sky, and saying will he be able to do as good a job on being a pundit now? As obviously, if he's his usual honest self about a players performance on Sky during a game, can he then go into the England training camp and have a decent relationship and motivate that player?

So will he have to now be a bit more careful what he says about England players?

don't see why not, from what i've seen when he's working as a pundit hes honest/fair and not really aggressive in his comments ?

Collymore is a prat but what he is saying is correct

AFAIK Neville hasn't been appointed Hodgson's number 2 so where is he correct because best I can tell it isn't Neville's job to go and scout the opposition he's there to coach on the training pitch and there's no reason why he can't do that and do Sky it's not an either or situation and even if for arguments sake it was being a pundit is hardly a full time job either it's 2/3 days max out of his 7 day week

The only point Collymore may have is that there's more deserving young coaches who have been doing it longer more deserving of a break than Neville who's walked into being a pundit and thus walked into this coaching role

By and large though Collymore isn't correct whatsoever, he's just bitter

I don't see why this should stop him commentating on club football...

I think the (potential) problem is that either:

1) He is honest as a pundit, which potentially means ****ging off England players and thus creating some sort of drama in the dressing room, undermining his England role.
2) He minces his words, being careful not to burn any bridges with England players, thus limiting his effectiveness as a pundit and undermining his Sky role.

How would the press deal with him saying that a player deserves a call up and then doesn't? The press will latch onto anything they can for a story

Well, if everyone simply started ignoring the press and the stories they try to generate, it wouldn't be a problem. With your average England fan jumping on every story the Sun prints and deciding to hate or love people based off some hyperbole, it could end up very difficult.

The only interesthing thing will be if Sky, Hodgson and Neville have the balls to ignore press rantings that mean literally nothing, and just do the job required. Or if one/any of them give in to manufactured press pressure and decide something had to be done.

Who cares if he says someone deserves a call up and they don't give said player that call up. MANY more people deserve a chance than will ever get one, that is part of life. Have you seen the Spanish team, and the guys who don't get a look in because of who else is in the team. Lorrente, Negredo, Saldado have barely played because of Villa and really a pretty woeful Torres in the past couple years still being in the team. It's still likely 2 of those three will barely get any game time in the Euro's when for me I'd take all three for England over any options we have at all, including Rooney even if he wasn't banned for most of the group stage.

The real world would be "so what, lifes hard", press world "Neville lied on TV, lets burn his house down till he either dies or is forced to resign.... woooo".

We can actually all choose to ignore the latter.
