hi

i bought a vw polo a few weeks ago

but when i was driving it yesterday

when selecting reverse...and starting to backup...all of a sudden the car would knock itself out of gear resulting in a massive expensive sounding grinding.:(

what would this be?is it expensive and should i get this fixed straight away.

what kind of damage can this do?

thanks in advance

what year of polo is it?

it's a common problem with polos, mainly the 6N2, where the gearbox fails. It's pretty expensive to get your box reconditioned or buy a reconditioned box.

it's not usually the reverse gear that goes first mind you. The main thing that usually causes the epic fail is the fact the 5th gear bearing is plastic rather than metal

hi

thanks for your reply

the polo is 1997

sometimes the car will reverse properly with no problems...im pretty sure its not me
as the car does move off backwards and then kickout of gear,so it cant be me not ingaging reverse properly can it?

*EDIT

All the other gears are perfect

ah right your car is probably too early for the usual gearbox problems then, so hopefully its something less serious and cheaper!

that's a 6N polo, they have no synchromesh... it could be something to do with the linkage

Terrible gear boxes... the gear lever (and in fact the clutch pedal too) are like something you would buy for your computer. Both feather light with no "feel" at all! The ease at which the gear level can be switched between gears is almost comical :D You'd think it wasn't actually linked mechanically in anyway to the actual cogs but was just there, like on a computer controller, to connect some electrical contacts together!

And that's just from a usability perspective!

^ dont mind it ...when its not grinding that is

i find the clutch really heavy compared to my old 1989 escort :)

but yeah im not a big fan of the gearbox..prefered the ford one
