I have been waiting ages for the new ATI R600 card and I know it is just around the corner but from what I have seen so far I have been fairly unimpressed.

I have been an ATI graphics user for some years now but was wondering whether to get this Geforce 800 GTX card now:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-044-GW&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=877

I use Vista Ultimate has my main OS and was wondering whether the driver issues have now been sorted with the Geforce cards? Also is it correct that although the ATI card might perform a few extra FPS there will not be much in it.

I also would appriciate any views on the Geforce 8800 on things such has HDTV footage has I use my PC to watch HD-DVD, etc.

I am wondering this too, but i still think the R600 range of cards will be more future proof when dx10 titles hit.

Not 100% sure though but im wondering wether to get GTX aswell cause i am itching to build my new pc.

Well preferably i hope fanboys dont attack this thread. Just honest opinions im not a fanboy myself i think Ati and Nvidia are both great companys and ill go with whichever is better.

I might wait for XTX but no telling how long i will be sat in dark...plus it will cost hefty.

How pointless is that post =/

How about try and help...?

If you have the patience, try and wait it out untill the R600 comes out, and then compare benchmark results from both companies, thats what im going to do, then decide if i really want to upgrade my x1900xtx...

However if you cant wait it out...The 8800 is a damn nice card, and it performs VERY well in practically all games that are out currently.

On the new DX10 titles however, i cant help you there really....yes there is a few 'benchmarks' around claiming to be the results of the 8800's...But i would still wait untill an official DX10 game is actually released fully in retail before judging.

Not the besst of help i know, but hey, best of luck. :)

So far the speculation is 8800 GTS < 2900XT < 8800 GTX < 2900XTX

And not much in it between them. The low end 8800's horse through any game available atm, so there'll be great choices out there.

No one's really sure, but in your case you might as well wait until the middle of May when we know the facts and the prices start moving.

Do a little homework and get the best you can for your money.

Kinda what he said ^^ time is on your side....hang on for just a couple of weeks and you could save a bundle and be sure of the facts :)

That said, I am well impressed with my GTX :D

cyber-mav likes to use a well know absurdly badly programmed game as if to make a point that 'not all games run very fast on an 8800'. im not sure why he bothers?

The problem I have is that the 360 version suffers none of the problems the PC version has. And all the 360 has is basically an X1900 (well, a bit less than that but still) which is unified shaders... so the graphic card isn't the problem :)

I really do not understand why Mav uses this game... I have seen tons of posts asking him why he uses those games...

Now if this was about GPU's, and he said Supreme Commander with 6 teams with 1000 units can make an E6600 at stock seem sluggish, I would agree perhaps :)

Personally, I would wait. Once the R600 is out, you can then make a much more informed decision which, if made right now, you may regret in the near future.

company of heroes + KMOD + transparant AA + 16AF = not such good performance on 8800GTX :p (KMOD has texture improvements, downloaded it last night an company of heroes is now a good game, thanks to the boys over at KMOD)

It is close now so definitely worth hanging on another month to see what they can do.
And see pricing and power consumption and image quality etc

I was in the same position as you after building a new PC about a month ago. I was holding off a buying a graphics card, but there's been so many delays with the new ATIs, they still don't look to be coming any time soon, and it's looking more and more like they're not going to be as spectacular as previously made out.

So on Friday I bought an 8800 GTX for £350 and, apart from having to take it back on Monday for a replacement as I got a dodgy one, I definately feel I made the right decision. I'm able to run any game on full detail at 1920x1200.

So my opinion; get a GTX. :)
