GeForce 9800 GTX Card Photos & Specs Unveiled

How can they call this a 9800 GTX if the specs are true?

unless they release this, then an ultra soon after? but even then surely the ultra will just be an overpriced card with a tiny speed boost :(

the 9800 GTX when released will definitelly be tri-sli, yet that pic only has 1 sli connector.

Nice catch there.

And once again, I reaffirm that this whole situation, at least as far as the appearance of the card goes is absolute and utter hogwash. :)

And the specs hardly look 'real' either to be honest.

If both ATi and nVidia are doing this, though, my next cards will be second hand just out of spite.

At least the 3870X2 was a decent improvement over a single 3870 :), this looks to be really bad, I hope this is just bull, will mean very slow progress and not much in the way of competition, come on r700! :D

that would be correct, except it has TWO connectors. one shows the gold connectors, the other is green. because ONE sli connection goes upwards to the card above it, and one goes to the card below, so the 2nd connector to the right, that looks just green, will have gold connectors on the other side to connect to card above it. so it is there.

AS for photoshopping, get over it, nvidia themselves make "mock ups" of cards, though very much the likely explaination would be that VR zone got the pic's off a manu and the info and they simply blanked out the heatsink design to get rid of the manu's logo.

a shopped heatsink, is not proof its fake, the 2nd sli connector is clearly there as theres a big gap, its just not showing up well as its gold and very very bright background, infact it might have accidentally been lost, but a 2nd connector is the only thing that would be in the "missing" section. gold + flash +very bright white background = the 2nd sli connector very hard to see, but how anyone could think that card only had one connector i really don't know unless you assume they simply cut an extra area of the pcb out for no reason at all.

Its been photoshopped even if its indicative of the real card... you can see artifacts where its been cut out and pasted onto the image around the fan circle and the solid black fill has inconsistant joins with the edges of the card.

Also according to the bottom image the black case comes all the way to the top of the mounting bracket but in the top image the black joins half way up it (only covers 1 port not 2)

No matter whether the pic is 'shopped or not, I really hope the specs are not right, otherwise it's going to be quite some time before games like Crysis will run how they should.

At the specs posted, it looks like a disappointing round for nVidia.

The memory concerns me... the 8800GT starts to become memory bandwidth starved once you get above 700MHz on the core - at 740MHz the difference between stock 900MHz memory and 1050MHz is almost 4fps in crysis benchmark (which when your lifting your scores from 43 to 47fps in crysis benchmark thats quite a bigger gain than the numbers would seem at first glance).

I still don't get it, why just release another GTS with an extra connector, and why call it a GTX (as the GTX is the top card, the GTS isn't), unless they are doing what AMD did, and thats by replacing their top single card (in this case the Ultra), with a dual card, namely the GX2, but i still don't get why this wasn't called the 9800 GTS instead, as going by the specs, slower core than an OC'd GTS, same 256bit bus etc.., its still going to be slower than the old GTX and Ultra at higher res with AA/AF, so if they are still faster, why EOL them in January to bring out a slower card to replace them, unless they are doing like i said, their replacement is the GX2 dual, like the 3870's replacement, was the X2, but who knows, as i still can't get me head around calling it a GTX if its a GTS, something isn't right surely. :p

The 9800GTX does 14k in 3DMark06 at 675/1688/2200 X9650 @ 3.0GHz
My O/C GTX does 15.4k at 647/1666/2044 Q6600 @ 3.72GHz

I'd guess they'd be about equal if the 9650 was @ 3.72GHz give or take a few hundred
But thats at 1280x1024 so surely at 1920x1200 with 8AA/16AF in games it's not going to be as quick as a 8800GTX due to memory bus and memory ammount ?

I say this because the texture fill rate appears lower then my 8800GTX by about 5 and the bandwidth is about 25Gb/s lower, even though all the clocks are higher

I agree with LoadsMoney - Should be called a 9800GTS not a 9800GTX

or alternatively call it a 8800GTS-Rivatuner :D
