PRS’s SE is Student Edition I think!
@Raymond Lin i hadn’t read the earlier posts so didn’t notice you had some. Thanks for the write up, I’ll keep them on my shortlist
Here is a crux.
1 - Since you really have to order it from their USA site, it is an import and there is a 20% VAT when it lands here. You have to budget for that. It really does drive up the cost from the check out price.
2 - While they don't do sales, not even on Black Friday, but every year around end of November they release all their demo and B-stock units for around 20% off. This basically levels out the VAT. B-stock doesn't necessarily means damaged, more often than not, it is just a mismatch of the wood on each side. Some people see it as a negative, I see it as character.
3 - There are limited edition, if you go to their site, there is currently one. Same price as normal wood too! So good if you are more a collector, but I just want a pair for the sound. I rather save the 20%.
Bonus point is the dollar is quite weak at the moment, if it drops to $1.50 to £1....I might not need to wait for Black Friday!
They have a UK (official) stockist, granted they only have a couple of sets in stock at this moment but that's where I'd get them from probably.
When i looked, the price on there was more than direct, plus I prefer and can wait for Black Friday for that 20% off.
Which model are you thinking of getting? or interests you?
Honestly I'm going purely by looks here, but these two I like the most. I don't like how their closed ones look though.
Auteur LTD Pyinma (600g though)
Atrium Open Redwood
It’s the angles on the closed back that I don’t get on with even though I prefer closed ones generally.
Not like I’m in a rush to get them though, so actually hanging on till November might not be a bad shout else as I don’t have anything to use them with yet.
The amount of options and stuff we giving me a headache too lol. Don’t understand most of it.
What do you mean by angle?
Reconsider the Bokeh.
My bad, it was the Caldera Closed I didn't like, even one of the FAQ's mentions it (THATS A LOT OF ANGLES, WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?)
Bokeh closed is interesting especially as you can also get the mic cable too, but I think I could use my existing one as I have a small XLR adapter I used to use in my K712s. I don't prefer the look of those over some of the fancy designs but in terms of practicality it seems to make more sense!
Ha, funny how how taste differs.
The bokeh is quite ordinary looking, just a round cup basically but it’s excellent. 1/3rd the price of the caldera but I can’t imagine it is 1/3rd worse built or worse sounding. It’s the same head band and they use the same ear pads too.
It’s so hard to choose though, because some of those designs I find stunning, but I have to remember it’s more important the practicality.
Some of those were I think 300ohm which would require additional stuff.
Probably disgusting to even mention it but I wonder if Bokeh would run on my old SB G6.
The Bokeh is like 60ohm so it can be powered by even the MacBook.
You are right about the others though, they are best with a proper amp but should still work with even a MacBook.
But an amp isn’t that expensive now, if you are going to spend £1k on headphones, even the Fiio K11 for like £150 would be a good investment together.
Come to think of it, I used to use my G6 with my phone, and then that was powering my DT770 (80ohm). G6 reckons it has a discrete amp up to 600ohm but that could be nonsense for all I know.
I do have anxiety though that I may like them but then get annoyed with having a wire again lol. Not like it's Amazon and you can just send them back.
The only way to try ZMF is in London on the 18/19th at Can Jam.
I can't get on with Focal, their headband size is too small for my head.
