ok im thinking of switching to Gentoo in a few weeks when i have a bit more knowledge of the shell

what i need to know is how hard it will be to get my internet connection up and running (blueyonder cable...) because i really dont want to be rebooting to get into windows everytime i have a problem :(

also a more general question.. can you browse the web (for example this site) from the shell? or must you be in x?

thanx..

It should be fine connecting to cable. I've never had cable before but it's a box right which then plugins into an NIC?

You can use the web via the commandline, you will need a commandline client like Links or Lynx :)

i have been looking on webby and it seems like it wont be to hard i just hated it when i got stuck before and had to reboot like every 5 mins to get more info on what to do :(

i can print things off but something always seems to crop up that you cant anticipate :/

Yeah it's handy to have two machines :) ... read though the Gentoo docs completely and familiarise yourself. Ask any questions before you install to clarify bit your hazey on.

How do you have your cable connected? If its via the NIC then no-problem just get the NIC up and running and you're connected.

Yes you can, but I dont think lynx or links are on the gentoo cd to help you mid-install. Im glad I had the 2nd machine when I done the install as there was an issue with the a lib which I needed to do a quick search on the gentoo forums to fix....

Yous right, something does tend to come up thats not anticipated... so as such you cant really plan for it. But the install doc on the gentoo website is included on the cd... it has good step by step instructions that are largely spot on [I think I spotted a typo or 2 and it missed one thing... not that I can remember what:p].

I have the following manuals in dead tree format:

  1. Most of the Gentoo docs
  2. GCC docs
  3. Route and ifconfig manpages
    [/list=1]

That will allow you to get on the net quite easily :)

  1. forgive me but what is dead tree format?

Lynx is on the gentoo cd.
If you get to the part about downlading the build tarble you want or getting one from the cd. To get ones from the internet you use lynx, i instructed my brother how to do it the other day.

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/build.html
Code:
Code listing 8.1: Downloading Required Stages
# cd /mnt/gentoo
# env TMPDIR="/mnt/gentoo" lynx [url]http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/releases/1.4_rc1/x86/[/url]

If you want to download a tarball why not use wget...Im pretty sure that its on there :)

Yeah but i'm just saying lynx is loaded on boot from the gentoo cd. Because you use it to select the tarble you want, if you want to downlaod one :)

aha1 I understand. What are you on about tarbles? Tarballs :) heh!

You may be 1337 at CS but I o\/\/nz0r!
