Poor little Phoebe discovered her gerbil had died this morning. A sad situation in itself....it was 3 and a half years old and despite it being fairly savage she loved it with all her 6 year old little heart *sniff*. But it was made far worse by the fact that the other gerbil has started to eat the ruddy thing! *barf* Poor Pheebs, no one needs to see a half eaten gerbil before her coco pops *barf again*

Awww, I dont mean to make light of it, she was so upset (and I wasnt thrilled either), but is that normal? The one thats alive was always the nice one, it doesnt bite and likes being handled.

What if its got a taste for blood and tries to eat us in the night?

Sorry but.

Rofl :p (about the cannibal gerbil, i'm sorry the other little chappie died)

I think it's just animal instinct, I wouldn't worry about having a Monty Python-esq white rabbit scene.

Cannibalism Among Gerbils

Question: We had 2 gerbils, they lived hapilly together for over two years but one of them ate half of the other - is this common or do gerbils do this to dispose of their dead my children are devestated and I need to tell them why this happened can you help?
Answer: These things happen. Please tell the children that one gerbil almost certainly died first, whereupon in nature, it would change from a mate/friend to an inanimate object. Gerbils originate in desert areas where protein is scarce. In nature there is little waste, so the dead gerbil would be re-cycled, so to speak. We find it upsetting, but nature is unemotional and strictly functional. I'm sorry the children were upset, but sometimes one just has to accept nature as it is, not as we wish it is or imagine it should be, I'm afraid.

at least you weren't having bacon sandwiches.... with tomato sauce...

Thats no ordinary Gerbil, thats the most foulest, cruelest, evilest animal...I have ever set eyes upon!

Don't ever get her rabbits we had rabbits and the female one got pregnant had a little of about 6 then ate them well at least chewed them to death

I found out female rabbits do this when they feel unsafe

If a mother rabbit smells your scent on the babies they do this (so I believe)

I had a ferret once who scoffed one of his babys during the night.

didnt realise you had to seperate them after the girl ferret gave birth.

Hang on, let me get this right, your Gerbil fell in to the Coco pops (I just love coco pops in front of the footy :D ) and has turned into a vampire

Yes Huddy, thats exactly right :p

Funny you should say that......the dead gerbils remaining remains are in a mini coco pop box awaiting state funeral after school!

I couldn't think of a better send off tbh.. No idea though.

Seriously, sorry to hear about that. It's quite difficult to explain to kids really.

Our back yard has more burried animals than... than.. than .. well some where that has lots of burried animals  - I have a plot reserved for the Mrs..

:(

Saw a bird that had obviously been smacked by a car while I was on the way home from work yesterday morning. Feathers everywhere. Clearly fatal. Nearly trod in it as well in my bleary-eyed stupour after having worked most of the night, but I noticed and avoided. Poor thing. :(

oh i am so going to hell, sorry for your daughters loss pebbles

but for some reason i couldn't stop myself laughing when reading this thread, somethin about some of the responses

I had 2 gerbils. One ate the other then died of indigestion.

and

When I was a kid we had two gerbils who suddenly had 6 babies, they ate two each night till they were gone!

i think there must be something wrong we me today... as i love animals, and this is a very sad topic :(

Hang on a minute, i think i may have just worked out what happened to my hamsters about 5 years ago...
I had 3 hamsters in a cage, which was all locked when i went somewhere for a couple of days. I left them plenty of food and water to last for 2 days, and there was no way they could have escaped form the cage. When i came home, there was one dead hamster (or maybe in a coma or something) and the other 2 had dissapeared  and the cage was still locked!! Never saw them again... :(

oh and i got the blame for all this, of course

But then again it does seem unlikely that one hamster ate the other two, so i guess i'll never know...
