German court rules circumcision is 'bodily harm'

Should always be the boys choice once he reaches the age to make such decisions for himself. Cosmetic/hygienic reasons aside, forcing such a thing on your child is just immoral.

Quoted for the truth.

Sadly those of religious persuasions generally don't follow logic or reason.

Let's pretend for a moment that a new religion appeared, kind of like Scientology did. Let's also say that they believed it correct to slice off the tip of a babies nose/ear/lip/whatever, leaving them functional but disfigured. Parents did this to babies shortly after birth and then, being brought up under the same religion, the children would grow up believing this to be correct and repeat it with their children.

So, what's the difference here? Is that acceptable? Obviously, this is aimed at the religious people who believe there to be nothing wrong with circumcision. I'm genuinely interested to see how this can be differentiated without "because the religion I was brought up to believe in is right and all the others are wrong".

I wish I'd have been circumcised as a child, would have saved me a lot of embarrassment in my teens.

Had in done for medical reasons as an adult, one of the best thing's I've ever done.

Same here and I agree.

However, if there was one thread that really didn't need resurrecting..... Hopefully Craterloads is out enjoying the sunshine

The second part of your post denotes medical reasons, I'm guessing this is some sort of phimosis? In which case, fair enough, but the problem is that it's not being done for medical reasons, it's being done for religious reasons, often disguised as medical in nature.

Many people suffer embarrassment for not being circumcised (and not having had a medical reason).

Embarrassment for what? Having a fully formed penis?

If you're talking about social pressure, i.e. from other circumcised teenagers, or girls, then that's bigotry and it should be discouraged. THAT is the problem. Not that you're not or weren't circumcised but that these people were brainwashed into thinking that having someone mutilate you as a defenseless child is somehow right and that if you were spared that horror, then you are somehow lesser, defective or weird.

It's similar to the argument against having two homosexual parents that "The child would be bullied in school for it". Well surely the problem there is not that their parents are homosexual, but that the other children's parents aren't doing a good enough job of teaching their children about what is acceptable behaviour?

edit: Thread necrophilia, doh.

Posting in a 9 day old thread hardly constitutes Necrophilia, it's still current and relevant! A year old thread, however...

So you had an actual medical problem, or mild deformity that required removal under medical reasons then...

I applaud the decision of the court. However, if someone at a mature age decides they wish to have a circumcision purely for aesthetic or other reasons, they should be welcome to do so.

I also had a wry smile whilst noting that ze Germans are persecuting (deliberately strong choice of word!) the Jews again.:D

They are not persecuting the Jews. It targets both Jews and Muslims, but the law changed due to a specific case, which, I believe, was raised by an individual and not the state.

You sound like the broken Israeli record.

Yes I had phimosis, the embarrassment was from the pain and inability to 'perform' very well. I was young and naive and hadn't seen much pornography at the time so didn't even know it was supposed to retract until I had a conversation with a few friends about it.

Odd thing is, I know of 3 other people in my circle of close friends that have had it removed in adulthood as well for similar reasons so what I was experiencing isn't that rare (at least not in my small sample anyway) although one of them did it for hygienic reasons.

I prefer it though, no more weeing in odd directions and I just think it looks better as 'one unit' :D.

Girls are pretty much 50/50 to it though, some prefer it, some don't and others don't care.

Surely that would be 33/33/33? :p

I'd hardly call this bodily harm.

I was circumcised when I was a baby. I'm glad my parents made that decision.

I'll have my sons (if/when I have them) circumcised too. The foreskin does nothing but hold dirt and grime.
